Absolutely Disgusting — Stay Away from Hotel Tex
We booked Hotel Tex out of desperation after our original accommodations fell through, and it turned out to be a decision we deeply regretted. This hotel should honestly be shut down.
First of all, the air conditioning didn’t work — in 40°C heat. When we asked the concierge, we were met with a smug and completely false response: “All of Rome doesn’t have air conditioning.” As someone who’s visited Rome many times, I can assure you this is total nonsense. The hotel simply doesn’t care about your comfort or experience.
The entire building reeks of cigarettes and mold, and the towels were absolutely revolting — stained (yes, with ass stains) and so saturated with the smell of smoke they were completely unusable. The bathroom looked like something out of a horror film — black mould growing in the grout, rust-stained fixtures, and a pungent, musty stench.
Guests are not allowed to use the stairs and are forced to use an ancient, claustrophobic elevator that seems one jolt away from collapse. When the power inevitably went out, my father was stuck in the lobby — and they refused to let him take the stairs to reach us. He had to wait until the power came back. Completely unsafe and unacceptable.
We were also overcharged 20 euros per night for a crib for our 4-month-old baby — an outrageous fee that most hotels waive entirely. And when we asked for a receipt, they flat-out refused. The hotel demands you pay the crib charge and city tax upfront at check-in, which is highly unusual and just adds to the shady, disorganized feel of the place.
Security is another massive red flag — guests are required to leave their room key at the front desk every time they go out. Why? No one could explain. It felt incredibly sketchy.
Back in the room, the refrigerator didn’t work, so after spending hours walking around Rome in blistering heat, we returned to a sweltering hotel room and hot bottled water (which we bought ourselves — the hotel provides nothing). The room safe was broken, making it feel even less secure.
The staff were rude, cold, and clearly didn’t care. Every request or question was met with indifference or annoyance.
Breakfast? A joke. Plastic-wrapped processed cheese, stale bread, and — shockingly — food that had clearly been put back out after being left on other guests’ plates. It was the final nail in the coffin of an already miserable experience.
And if all that wasn’t enough: the hotel is located in a very unsafe, ghetto neighbourhood. There is clear gang activity happening right outside the hotel’s doors — loitering groups, shouting, and a generally threatening atmosphere. We felt unsafe walking outside, especially at night, and especially with a baby.
If you're looking for a hotel that will make you never want to return to Rome, Hotel Tex is it. Filthy, unsafe, overpriced, and run by people who don’t care about you or your well-being. Avoid this place at all costs. If I could give zero...
Read moreThe hotel is near Roma Termini train station which is a plus but the location of the hotel is like a ghetto at night. The first night, we were welcomed by a nice receptionist and the check-in is smooth. Unfortunately the next day, it was a different staff that has an abrupt and unfriendly personality. You need to leave the keys every time you go out, we were only informed the next day and the way they speak is not welcoming, unpleasant and unfriendly. The hallway is filthy and has a funny smell, lift/elevator is ancient. The room is basic, tidy, there's basic toiletries provided which is okay and the housekeeping staff tidied the room well. But furnitures is outdated and broken. Stain on walls. Dusty ceilings. Paint stripping. Bathroom tiles needs scrubbing. Towels has an odd smell. Bed is basic, hard and firm. The curtain's pelmet is dusty in the room. Air-conditioning only blows hot air and we have to open the windows to let the air circulate. Believe it or not we found a wood louse, though they are harmless anyway. Lots of dust... Not good for people with asthma. I have an allergic rhinitis, I have medication with me but a few nights it bothered me. The breakfast room is okay and the lady staff there is very nice. The curtain's pelmet is dusty in the breakfast room, food is basic and it's alright. The big question is what about the kitchen area? I just wondered because the hotel is filthy. And here's the funny experience, we need an ironing board and it's located in the hallway first floor near the breakfast room. It's chained to the wall and you have to iron your clothes while other guests passing you. When it comes to value of money, yes it's good for off-peak season and if you're not choosy. I don't recommend this hotel on peak season when the price go up, even you're desperately looking, you'll just be disappointed. Hotel needs total renovation. And I don't recommend this hotel even you're on a budget. Big...
Read moreNeeded a hotel close to the Roma Termini. Through my credit card travel website I found this place and looking at the photos provided, decided to book it for 1 night. The price was outrageous at $300+/night even for the busy season. But nothing could have prepared me for what I encountered at the ground level. This place looked like it had just been dropped for the 50s. The check in was an old school paper register and we got keys to go to our room that we had to deposit at the front every time we left the premises. Fine, it's Retro! sure! The room that looked like a spacious suite in photos was ramshackle and crammed with a double bed and 2 single beds to accommodate the 4 of us.The beds were uncomfortable but that seemed to be the least of the problems. The bathtub drain just did not drain and the shower heads were more like stream from an overhead tap. I went downstairs to complain and ask for a different room but the gentleman at the front desk said he did not have any other rooms and the plumber will not be able to come until the next day after we would have already checked out. The one thing I will say is that the person at the front desk was a nice gentleman but he might as well have been a prop since there was nothing he could do. The breakfast was below average even by spartan European standards. Definitely not the $300/night level. a low budget motel in the US would seem like a feast compared to this. I filed a grievance with my credit card company since I felt like this place did not deserve to be on their listing of hotels. It is downright misleading. I would not pay a dime over $100 for this place and i would not recommend this...
