Al Mercato di Ortigia — Hotel in Syracuse

We found this B&B in a travel guide for Sicily. Ortigia is a wonderfull place to visit and so is the location of the B&B. However, the building in which the B&B is located is probably the ugliest in the whole island. |During our stay (two nights) the room was not cleaned in the morning (in most B&Bs they do it, even in cheaper ones). We had problems with hot water because apparently there was just a little quantity to be used for the shower and we weren't told. So, the first night only one of us could take a shower (it was winter). The really disappointing part was that we found out that other guests could bargain the price and pay less than we did and we were not even given the receipt. Abbiamo soggiornato una notte in questo B&B a Ortigia e purtroppo la nostra esperienza è stata molto negativa. Al nostro arrivo ci è stato chiesto il pagamento in contanti, con la giustificazione che il conto del gestore era stato “clonato” e che non poteva ricevere bonifici. Il POS era presente ma non funzionante, senza spiegazioni chiare. Una richiesta che, se comunicata in anticipo o con trasparenza, sarebbe stata più comprensibile.

La stanza, invece, si è rivelata poco accogliente: forte odore di marcio, arredi disposti senza criterio, polvere visibile sulle poltrone e sui copriletti. La notte è stata disturbata dalla presenza di zanzare o piccoli insetti che ci hanno impedito di dormire serenamente.

Il peggio, però, è arrivato dopo la nostra partenza. Avevamo lasciato la stanza alle 8 e, dopo circa 35 minuti di viaggio in autostrada, il gestore ci ha telefonato accusandoci – con tono gravemente offensivo e minaccioso – di aver rubato un asciugamano. Le sue parole sono state: “buffoni, vi vengo a prendere, gente come voi la conosco, vi denuncio alla polizia”, il tutto urlato in seconda persona, mentre noi rispondevamo sempre con educazione e dandogli del “lei”.

Per dimostrare la nostra buona fede, ci siamo fermati in una piazzola d’emergenza e abbiamo fatto un video in diretta mentre svuotavamo zaini e bagagli. Quando lo abbiamo richiamato, il tono era meno aggressivo ma ancora sgradevole, e con frasi come “non essere ridicolo” e “gente come voi la conosco”, sembrava quasi compiaciuto di averci spaventati con la telefonata precedente, come se fosse stato un suo “modo per dare una lezione”.

Infine, dopo nemmeno un minuto, ci ha richiamati dicendo che era stata la moglie a prendere lei stessa l’unico asciugamano mancante. Ha chiesto scusa, ma certe scuse arrivano troppo tardi: prima si controlla, poi – semmai – si chiama, con rispetto. Accuse infondate, minacce e un tono intimidatorio non possono essere cancellati da un semplice “mi dispiace”.

I spent 6 nights in this small B&B. It has a very good location at the beginning of Ortigia, right where the daily market is held. My room was good sized, a comfortable bed and a small but complete en-suite bathroom (narrow shower door difficult if you weigh + 100kg), no street noise. Small TV but who cares : 50+ channels all Italian. Excellent free WIFI. Lady of the house speaks English well and German even better.
