Atami Ikyuan — Hotel in Atami

The police came at 12am because the building manager was screaming at some other guests. They disturbed our sleep to ask us what our opinion was, and talked loudly next door until 3am. Completely unacceptable and frankly scary. The booking manager refused to accept responsibility and isn't cooperating in refunding us for a ruined night's sleep and the loss of half the next day. The rooms are poorly equipped; no mirror, no dustbin, dirty, and the walls are falling apart. The whole house is falling to pieces and isn't kept clean at all. There is a way to do a traditional guest house with all the cute antiquated decor but letting the place fall into ruin is not the way to do it. They charged is extra to use the shower facilities so beware of the hidden charges. The bathroom smells like a public toilet and the floor is sticky. If I could give 0 stars I honestly would. The facilities they charged extra for are relatively nice, and the view is ok. But please don't come here. You'll have to deal with screaming matches between the staff and guests and police disturbing your sleep. Worst AirBnB I have...

All of the trappings of an expensive ryokan for 1/6th the price and without any of the fuss.

I don't understand why this hostel has such low reviews. But it is a hostel, not a hotel. If you're someone who doesn't like to be babied or stifled by ryokan staff, this place is a hidden diamond. It has the best parts of a ryokan: The building itself is over 100 years old, with that wonderful antique wood smell and traditional design. The outdoor onsen is simple but archetypal, and from rooms to kitchens to the patio/garden, everything is clean and well-maintained. The rooms have traditional beds and are surprisingly spacious including a mini-fridge and sink.

The check-in process is a little convoluted, but no one will bother you during your stay. I really recommend this place if you're not interested in the futon and washoku of a ryokan, but still want a taste of the traditional experience. You should give Atami...
