Staff impressions: You probably won't see them much but they do an excellent job. The woman running the desk the day we arrived had perfect english (easily the best of the trip) and was very friendly. Kitchen was always loaded with toast, tea, and coffee every morning.||||Room amenities: All rooms are cube-style, some are set sideways and some you enter at the foot of your bed. The whole floor is co-ed so if that is a turn off do be aware. To me it's a great benefit as I often don't stay in hostels because my wife and I travel with one bag and don't want to have to deal with being in separate rooms. All cubes feature a privacy curtain (which you may want to leave cracked for additional airflow depending on the season, an outlet, an overhead light, a hook with a hangar, and a small fan that vents in air from outside the cube. As a 6'3" tall man I was concerned the rooms might be too small but I found I had ample space with a few inches to spare. Beds are semi-firm but comfortable, twin-sized with a bit extra head/footspace. Most importantly it was clean. You'll be provided with a fresh towel each day to use in the shower. My main complaint about the rooms was that unless you left the curtain partially open they tended to get warm/stuffy even with the vent running. ||||Other features: community kitchen on one of the upper floors. Came with pots/pans, fridges, etc. Television that we didn't use. On the floor with the rooms there are lockers (one for each person), a place to chain your bag up, sinks, a mini fridge, vending, restrooms, and coin laundry. The bathrooms are split by sex as are the shower rooms. Showers are individual stalls that have a solid door that locks. Shampoo/conditioner and soap are provided.||||Location: A good distance to access the local train system and shinkansen but not too far from the buses. On a quieter street off the Peace Park but has some close options for food/drink. Not far to other...
Read moreI loved Hostel Mallika! The location is amazing, a 5 minute walk from the Peace Park, Memorial Museum and A-bomb Dome. The WiFi was excellent, and the capsules comfortable and large with a storage shelf, power points, a light, and mini-air conditioning, plus a hand-towel which is replenished fresh every day. Each dorm comes with a large dressing space, with sinks, a huge range of toiletries (cotton buds, tissues, toothpaste, mouthwash, sake-scented body lotions(!), handsoap), lockers for valuables, and vending machines. The common area is like an informal cafeteria and free breakfast is provided (toast with a range of jams, plus a coffee machine for all coffee types, and tea). The lady that was on duty in the kitchen each morning I was there was wonderful and spoke excellent English. Luggage can be left for free in the dorms after checkout, they even provide padlocks and "bike lock" style cords to secure your bags to the wall for security, not that it's needed! The main entrance door requires an entrance code, so the building is completely safe. ||||The only minor gripes I had were the toilets on each floor were quite small and cramped. Also the showers are on the same floor as the common area, not the dorms, which was mildly cumbersome, although shampoos and body lotions are provided. When everything else was as amazing as it was, these are very minor issues.||||A really...
Read moreI recently stayed at this hostel and it was a good experience. The hostel is located about 5 minutes walk of the Hiroshima Peace Park. Mallika is a fair distance from the main train station (and the Shinkansen). However, there are numerous buses and street cars to travel there. ||The hostel itself was very clean and well maintained. The beds are in a pod style with a small a/c unit in the bedspace. That does not, however, prevent the beds from becoming very hot unless you keep the curtain open which reduces the privacy. Plentiful power sockets and a light are in the bed space. Each bed also has locker space provided to store valuables. ||The third floor contains the kitchen and common area. A breakfast of toast and coffee (via a machine) is available 05:00-11:00. Like other hostels in Japan, the showerooms contain complimentary body wash, shampoo and conditioner. The facilities were clean and self-service laundry facility is available. ||Overall a good place to stay in Hiroshima, especially as most stay for a short period....
