As a family with two young children, we were so glad to have chosen Granvia Hiroshima South Gate as our hotel in Hiroshima. The convenience of it being directly attached to Hiroshima station made it super easy for daily excursions to say, Miyajima (a must-do) and Okunoshima (rabbit island). It’s not within walkable distance to the Hiroshima downtown area, but it’s only 15-20 minutes away by tram.||At the time of our stay, the hotel had only been opened for a week, so of course everything was immaculate and sparkly new. The rooms were huge by Japanese standards (the largest we’ve seen after visiting 4 different cities in Japan), no problem laying out both of our large American suitcases here! There was even a legit couch (not just chairs) and decent size table in the room.||I had emailed the hotel prior to ask about amenity kits and meals for kids and for direction to some of the places on our checklist and found the staff super helpful and responsive. Our room was thoughtfully set up with bed guardrails prior to our check-in. They had told us that kid’s breakfasts were not included with our booking, so we were prepared to pay during check-in or check-out, but they ended up not charging us any extra fees. They didn’t have to do that (the previous Granvia hotel we stayed at did not do that), but it just elevated the customer experience.||And breakfast was an absolute standout! The seafood included Hiroshima specialties like anago meshi (eel rice) and raw clams with sake chasers… almost too gourmet for breakfast!||There is also a newly opened mall called minamoa right next to the hotel with 6 floors of shopping and restaurant options and a sky garden. The Hiroshima station itself is undergoing the final stages of a massive renovation to make it more of a destination.||The only thing to note is that this Granvia location does not have a self laundry facility or a communal bath, unlike its Kyoto counterpart. But we didn’t find it to be too much of an inconvenience given all the other things it...
Read moreThis hotel is new and extremely well-located, directly connected to Hiroshima Station with multiple convenient entrances. It offers seamless access to all transportation options, including a gate linked to the Japanese Railway, and another that leads directly to buses and streetcars. For travelers, this level of connectivity is a major advantage.
The rooms, although small, are very clean and thoughtfully equipped with modern amenities. However, I did notice dust in several areas of my room, which was disappointing given the otherwise clean appearance—especially considering how expensive the hotel is. Normally, I would overlook something like this, but at this price point, attention to detail matters.
Unfortunately, my check-in experience was unusually poor. Two receptionists told me my reservation did not exist and stalled for quite a long time—about 30 minutes. At first, I assumed it was just a simple mistake, but the way the situation was handled made it feel more like a result of poor training or unprofessional behavior. I was misled about how to check in using the automated machine, which had vague and confusing instructions, and the staff did little to assist me even as I struggled in front of them.
This was especially surprising because I’ve stayed many times at this hotel’s older branch within the same station, and I’ve always had excellent experiences there, including memorable business dinners and restful nights. That history makes me inclined to believe my experience this time was an isolated incident.
I want to acknowledge that not all staff are to blame, and I’m sure there are many great workers at this location. Despite this unfortunate experience, I’m giving the hotel 4 stars because of its excellent location, new facilities, and the potential it clearly has. However, I will personally avoid this particular branch in the future, so I can keep my good memories of the older...
Read moreThe hotel is conveniently located in Hiroshima Station and very easy to find. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by staff and the check in was smooth.
The room was very well furnished, generous size, with a nice view overlooking the city. Travelling with an infant added a layer of complexity but the hotel staff were very attentive to our needs. A bed guard was provided, and the cot was in very good condition and sleep safe (mesh portacot). Our room was always clean and well stocked with amenities. We slept so well, our baby included!
The restaurant breakfast buffet is a must try and well worth the money—the food was of a high standard, with great local variety and tasted delicious. We were disappointed we were one of the last entrants and didn't have much time to sample all of the food.
We also want to give a shoutout to the lovely Makiko san. She is a ray of sunshine, with a warm, hospitable personality and beautiful soul. She remembered us everytime we walked through the lobby, and went above and beyond to help us contact different stores to confirm if they had baby food in stock. I enjoyed our conversations and it was an absolute pleasure getting to know her.
If we could change anything about the hotel, it would be laundry facilities given our long holiday and lots of baby clothes to wash, though we didn't mind walking to the laundromat.
The next time we visit Hiroshima we will certainly be back at this hotel. We highly...
