We were 4 in our family travelling (all adults). We got the 4 tatami room. Sleeping on the tatami was fine though by the 3rd night my spouse said her back was hurting. Did not use heat or AC as outside temperature was perfect. Room and bathroom were clean though the balcony was a little dingy. Also you had to step out onto the balcony to use either the toilet or shower - they were separate - strange to have the facilities out on the balcony. B&B is difficult to find for taxis. Our taxi driver could not find them and had to call them. I would suggest you print their address in Japanese so the taxi drivers can find it easily.||The owners smiled, were polite and gave you assistance if you asked. However, we felt that it was not done wholeheartedly. For example - at breakfast, I would be served a third of a cup of coffee and when asked for some more it was given grudgingly. There was no warmth in their conversations. Also the breakfast was the same every day.||Finally, it is not close to transportation and be prepared for a 10 minute downhill and a 15 minute uphill walk...
Read moreMy partner and I were pleasantly surprised by our stay. It was our first guest house experience and it was awesome. It's family run and you see them throughout your stay. When you first arrive, the wife provides you with a map of Kyoto and helpful tips to get around the city such as bus routes. The room is much much larger than those of a typical Japanese hotel and it was a great feeling to be able to spread out a little and not be on top of each other during our stay. Breakfast is included and is delicious! We looked forward to it every morning to get our day started off right. Breakfast is also a great time to get to know the owners and any other guests staying at the time!||||The house itself is a little off the beaten path, in that there's a 10 minute or so trek to and from the nearest bus stop, however, the reward is an amazing view that you'll find at the top! The balcony to our room as well as the patio area of the guest house have simply amazing views of Kyoto and you will not be disappointed. Will definitely stay here again when we go...
Read moreThis was the highlight of our trip to Japan. First, my apologies to the staff at Hennka that it has taken so long for me to write this review. When looking for Ryokan's in Kyoto, this place caught my eye due to its location. It is far enough away from the city center, yet close enough we could be at Kyoto station in 10-15 minutes. There's a bus stop at the bottom of the hill, and a great Kaiten Sushi place on the corner. (It was a great place to stop at the end of a busy day) It's a short walk through a residential area, so it felt like we lived there. The tatami room was spectacular! It was more than enough room for the four of us, and it had a wonderful view of downtown Kyoto. The staff was super friendly, and took time to help point out places where we should go for sightseeing. I cannot say enough great things about Hennka, and we are already planning to go back. If you have a family of 4 - 5, I would highly recommend you stay here to really experience...
