Truly a special place.
No frills - just great sushi and super kind staff. Chef truly cares about his craft and ensuring his customers have a tasty and good time. If you’re staying at a nearby hotel this is a no brainer as a more casual spot requiring no reservations.
The entire staff was very welcoming. The other people there were Japanese men in suits so it really is a rare best of both worlds of amazing food and very kind service even though we were an English speaking pair.
Some of the best sushi I had in Kyoto, even compared to places you may find acclaimed in the Michelin guide. My pictures obviously do the flavor and textures no justice so you will just have to go try for yourself.
I enjoyed how the onigiri was often prepared in pairs to try with sauce and no sauce.
Will try to visit again...

Wow… stumbling into this place on a random night really changed my perspective on sushi and food in general.

However, the quality/freshness of the fish, the amazing service and the care that the owner puts into each piece, the way he constantly checked to see if we’re enjoying our meal really sealed the deal for us. Each piece of sushi was better than the next, and the only regretful moment was when we found out they didn’t have more of the ones we wanted because it was near closing.
Having eaten sushi for a while now, this dinner trumps every other sushi dinner I’ve had, whether if it’s Japan or anywhere else in the world, Michelin or...
Read moreAfter a rainy morning at the Kyoto National Museum we happened upon this gem a couple of blocks away for lunch. Be sure to check the last page of the English menu for the lunch special for 1,350 yen. Of this, we sampled fresh sashimi (sea bream, tuna, squid), tempura, grilled fish, rice, pickles, a clear soup and green tea with various garnishes and sauces to supplement. Each tasted wonderful although I found the tempura a bit chewy. It's a neighborhood favorite as we learned from our airbnb hostess as well as a friendly diner. We will be returning to try out the bento boxes. The staff does not speak English but the menu is clear and pointing suffices. Based on the fine quality and freshness of the sashimi, the tastes, presentation and service and local ambience, I rate...
