Takaokaya — Hotel in Kyoto

I don’t even know where to begin to say how completely pleased we are and grateful to have discovered Takaokaya Global and Valery who responded for months to my questions about their shikifutons and giving me her advice while I was trying to determine not only if I wanted to purchase my shikifutons from them but what would work best given our situation and our needs. She was so sweet, so patient always able to advise and in the end I got exactly what I hoped for and what she promised. Outstanding. We had run out of options for authentic shikifutons in the USA having slept on these for a number of years needing to replace one we had for 8 years. After a number of disappointing failed attempts to find a shikifuton that was comparable we decided we might have to go further in our search all the way to Japan. After comparing a few makers in Japan and emailing we chose Takaokaya to make our shikifutons. We never had any doubt we were on the right track. Many months had passed maybe close to a year since first contacting Valery and when I once again reached out …ready to order …Valery remembered me and all we talked about in the past. After many emails back and forth with her guidance I ordered two twin xl shikifutons in color Nanohana. I sent Valery a picture of our room and she gave me her suggestion for fabric color. It is awesome. The cotton feels and looks great. We have a springless king frame and mattress we bought in February thinking we would never find an authentic shikifuton again that would be acceptable. We can’t return it so for the moment we have placed the shikifutons on top of the mattress which is almost as firm as our tatami mats. Sleeping on our new shikifutons is like “coming home” Best feel ever. We have missed that feel so finding Takaokaya felt like a dream come true. There is nothing better for a good nights sleep …our bodies aligning once again. It is so obvious that a lot of pride, love and care went into making these and even in the shipping. I had concerns about costs, time frame for shipping and safety… of the packaging. It all could not have gone more smoothly. After shipping it took only 10 days to reach my doorstep. Not a smudge on the boxes delivered USPS. Everything packaged lovely. They have so much more to offer on their website and just trying to decide what we want next:) Lovely shop, lovely people. I have just received my sofa zabuton pillows yesterday July 8,2025 from Takaokaya. They are as nice as I could’ve expected. Everything they do from beginning to end is as good as it gets. Packaged lovely with all the lovely inserts and a personalized note from Valery. The pillows of this size don’t have the corner threads unless you specify for a nominal extra charge. I opted not to as I wanted them as seen in their site. The shipping was quite reasonable. I ordered June 22 and at my door July 8!! The pillows and cushions from Takaoka are perfect! My wife learned about Takaoka prior to our recent visit to Kyoto and the images on their website encouraged us to stop-by the company’s showroom – we are very glad that we visited them! We purchased a variety of pillows and cushions once we saw that they are as gorgeous in-person as they are in the company's online photos. The fabrics used in the pillows and cushions are incredibly high quality: they are lush, sturdy, and refined. The construction of each pillow/cushion is flawless, with every stitch sewn precisely to create a fit of the materials that feels sound, tight, and strong. The stuffing is uniform and durable, thus yielding a perfectly comfortable feel – cushy with just the right amount of firmness. Truly, the quality of the materials, stuffing, and sewing is exceptional. The cushions and pillows are the highest-quality that I can imagine.

Also, the employees of Takaoka are experts at all parts of their operations. My family’s visit to their showroom was a very enjoyable experience. We received thorough guidance about their products and learned about the wide variety of fabric options that they offered. Once we selected options, we received great support shipping the pillows and cushions to our home in the U.S. They arrive quickly and in perfect condition. The team at Takaoka were remarkably efficient in how rapidly they created, packaged, and shipped the items we purchased.

What a wonderful experience I get to have starting from the day I opened the package. The QUALITY IS SUPERIOR, professional quality products across all the website, you will notice it when you order ANYTHING from there. Nothing like a regular package from the states, trust me. I have never received a hand written special note from any company here in the US. It warms my heart and makes me so happy, I shed tears reading the love. I feel so well rested. I didn't know the tatami matt would transform my experience even more! I absolutely LOVE sleeping now, looking forward to it every day and waking up well rested. I get to experience this type of rest in the western world for my LIFETIME. I hope one day you will do the same. There are no mistakes in life, it's better to try and fail then not try at all.
