Nochika — Restaurant in Kyoto

I ate here with my wife and although the food served was good, the price was high for the portions served. The 3 stars are for the quality of the food. Upon entering, the place felt quite traditional and we where welcomed and shown our seats from the owner, which after few minutes gave us a menu in English. However, upon reading the menu we learned that there is a customary entrance "offered" to all guests at the price of 500¥, and there is where our dining experience got ruined: either you offer the entrance or you don't. Imposing something to a customer is not OK, and it felt like it was aimed particularly at tourist, as was charging for hot green tea. The food offered was excellent, however the portions where small and the price (menu price does not include taxes) compared to the portions are quite high. The point is: if I want to eat gourmet food I go to an high end restaurant, but if I go to a small family owned restaurant, I expect abundant dishes at a reasonable price, which we did not get. Absolutely delicious ''Oishi'' as the Japanese say. Food was cooked to near perfection. Every dish played a sweet melody on the palate. I highly recommend! service prompt but not overdone and a nice cosy traditional ambience. Shocked to see any review below 4 stars! If you happen to read the negative reviews let me just say that the restaurant is one of quality not quantity and the food merits the price. The service charge is the closest the Japanese come to tips and when you think about the size of these restaurants, it's surprising that they are sustainable when the max capacity is around 10 customers. So to give 3 stars due to a service charge (which; in the menu is detailed to go towards a traditional aperetif served before your meal and very good may I add) of about €3, is unfair! This was one of the best meals we have had in Kyoto. We stumbled across this isakaya and were impressed with the freshness and delicate flavours of all the food. We were given a complimentary starter of crushed eggs, tea or miso soaked eggplant and tofu with greens in the most beautiful plates. We ordered tempura with seafood, duck breast, grilled salmon, steamed vegetables and rice, miso etc. we had 2 large glasses of sake (chef's choice) and 2 beers.
