I selected this ryokan to stay a night before our hike to Kumotori. As with all good Japanese ryokans, this was well run by the mother and daughter pair, who are truly lovely and genuinely warm hosts. No airs. My son and I enjoyed our stay because we felt welcomed.
Even though the ryokan had many rooms, it seems like they are only accepting a few guests (mid March). Perhaps it was not easy to cope with too many guests.
Dinner and breakfast were delicious, though no fish dishes, there was some meat, and a lot of vegetables (which I appreciate!).
Take note that breakfast is served at 8am, which pushed back our start time of the hike, which on hindsight was not that good an idea in winter conditions (lots of snow!).
The bath downstairs was very clean and well maintained, but small with no views (indoor). It was amazingly hot and I always enjoy a good hot bath.
The room we had overlooked the river, but take note there is a huge factory complex by the river. No sound issue, just very large.. and honestly, fascinating. It reminded us of a Miyazaki’s creation.
No attached toilet, but the shared toilets were very clean, and the sinks to wash up etc were also very pleasant.
Clearly a labor of love! For the warm service by the hosts, it trumps any minor niggles. We...
Read moreOkutama is not a very popular tourist spot (at least for Hong Kong tourist) so it's rather difficult to find reviews of hotels in this area. Most of the reviews were written in Japanese but I really want more people to know about this beautiful place and also this great hotel kankoso. That's why I am typing the review in English. ||The location is quite convenient, not far from the okutama station. It is just next to the river and you can have a pleasant walk with great view just under the hotel.||It's a traditional Japanese style hotel with tatami and onsen. The onsen area is not very big but as I was the only one enjoying that at that moment, it is far bigger than enough. The dinner and breakfast were also in Japanese style and the taste was good.||The staffs there were very nice and polite. We could see that they take their job seriously so we were not worried about the cleanliness of the room. But I am not sure if they can communicate in English as I talked to them in Japanese and their website has Japanese version only. ||Me and my family love everything in this place and we would like to visit again...
Read moreWe had SUCH a lovely stay at this inn! The folks who run it are so sweet and accommodating and took great care of us. The food was plentiful and delicious, and we loved exploring Okutama and enjoyed the hike to the lake about 10 km away (we caught a bus back - super easy peasy). The wifi is great and we were cozy and comfortable when we stayed in late March, despite the snow! We came in on a Sunday night and stayed until Tuesday morning - there wasn't a whole lot that was open on a Monday in March as far as restaurants, just be aware of that, but we were able to find some coffee and beer and do some local shopping at the little booth marketplace above the train station. Note that the trains will be cancelled if there is snow... the host generously offered to drive us to Ome Station but we opted to stick around a bit longer instead.
Again, would highly recommend visiting this ryoken - so worth it and such a great value for the price, and I wish we had stayed...
