I was persuaded to stay here on account of the location and the 'excellent' reviews I'd read.||The only thing that's excellent is the location- very handy indeed for the sights of the old town. I can't quibble about that, but here goes….||The night of my arrival was a near disaster. The code for the gate worked fine. The code for the keybox didn't and after several stressful moments I whatsapped the owner who luckily gave me a code that worked. (The keypad is essential because unless you're arriving between 10 am and 1 pm, then your only means of access is to retrieve your key from a box outside the property, because the hostel is otherwise unstaffed) ||The next day two other guests had the same problem with the keypad with similarly stressful consequences. Fortunately for them, I was around and able to assist them. ||The room I stayed in was adequate but unfortunately right next to the toilet and the kitchen, ie, noisy, especially when guests congregated in the kitchen during the evening. Facility wise, the tap in the toilet sink was lopsided. Even worse, one of the two bathrooms upstairs was completely out of action, gutted, and full of workmen's tools. The sink in the other bathroom was also out of action and covered in hazard tape, but at least the shower worked.||On my third night there, the toilet roll in the downstairs toilet had run out, which I was flabbergasted by.||I could moan about no breakfast being available but I know this isn't de rigeur- not a problem for me personally.||The place could also have been cleaner, the toilet and kitchen bins emptied more frequently ( they were invariably full) and also less noisy. I could hear every syllable of a conversation in the next room and every cough and splutter, not to mention drunken voices in the kitchen (my earplugs came in handy).||On the plus side, the kitchen was clean and well appointed and the one staff member I encountered, albeit briefly, was very pleasant and understanding when I told her I might cut my stay short and didn't pressure me to pay up instantly on account of this.||However,I can certainly say, with absolute conviction, that this property is definitely not a 9/10. This rating is scandalous. Realistically a 7/10 is more accurate. Not a bad hostel, but with a little effort and more consideration, could be...

Horrible experience: I got robbed. I arrived 2hs before the check in and the receptionist told me to leave my luggage in a locked room, and come back later. When I go back to the hotel, the receptionist opens the door and my things were gone. She left the keys of this room on the desk and left for who knows how long. Somebody grabbed it, open the room and took my things. They have cameras, but they don't record. I called the police and spent 4hours describing all the things that got stolen. The hotel took no responsibility at all and offered me nothing. I had to ask for compensation (towels, a private room, not be charged for my stay and some money), but they did not want to do that. It was to the point I started crying that they were ok with giving me some money to buy basic toiletries (of course not equivalent to what I lost because of them), and they did not even said that they were sorry. Clearly this ruined my vacation. I lost more than 1.300eu in things because of their incompetence, and they did not even had a human response to this. Really the worst experience I ever had...

I read the reviews before booking accommodation and Mikalo House fit the bill for location, price and reviews. The place is in a non-descript alleyway and in the old town. The host forgot to send me a confirming email on the details of accommodation, accessing the property etc. The building is fine and the rooms are not bad. There is reasonable cleanliness but lacks attention to details. I stayed in several hostels and the ones that are real popular ( and full) are the ones where the folks running them are hands on and very very clean. This is a one man operation and the owner is here only during the day. The bed sheets etc though clean, are a bit ‘tired’. The place does not have any joie de vivre and there is no common sitting area except the kitchen chairs. In most good hostels there were couches and common areas to relax. After walking around the whole day, it’s nice to crash to a couch. The kitchen area is clean and nice but that’s all there is. I also heard from others who had booked rooms that they were spacious.

Amazing stay at this hostel! ⭐️ The location is perfect — everything is within walking distance, and it’s super easy to reach public transport or get to the airport, which makes it very convenient. The common areas are clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated. During my stay, the place was all set up for Halloween 🎃 with fun decorations everywhere, creating such a warm and festive vibe. The staff is wonderful: Ira is so kind, 🌸 welcoming, and always ready to help with great local tips. You can tell she genuinely cares about making guests feel at home, and it really makes a difference. The rooms are spotless and comfortable, with secure lockers and good bedding. The facilities are excellent — there’s a hairdryer, tea and coffee available, a well-equipped kitchen, and strong Wi-Fi everywhere. In short, it’s a cozy, friendly, and perfectly managed hostel. Great value for money and definitely a place I’d recommend to any traveler!

Perfect location, good safety level, you open the gate and enter territory using the code. Owners were very helpful and we had a smooth check-in at midnight. Our room with two beds was very clean, spacious, very dry comfortable beds and mattress. We got towels as well. Amazing water pressure in shower, stable hot water, clean bathroom, free shower gel. Even free tooth paste, that’s a nice touch. The only thing that was negative is extremely thin walls and you could hear people as if they are in the same room with you (you can even hear how they heavily breathe, yawn, open their bag as if they ate standing next to you). Our room was between reception and kitchen, so people checking-out early were loud and making lots of noise by closing doors and shouting “thank you! Good byyyee!!” I recommend to stay here if you sleep deep and can’t be bothered by snoring neighbors and loud people checking-out early.
