Review: Thirty Three Stewart Houze Guest House
Thirty Three Stewart Houze is a fantastic choice for group travelers, solo adventurers, and couples. Located within the UNESCO heritage zone of Georgetown, it's within walking distance of popular attractions like the Goddess of Mercy Temple, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, and Penang Peranakan Mansion. Major landmarks like Penang Jetty and KOMTAR are 15 minutes on foot, and Gurney Drive is a 15-minute drive away. Penang International Airport and Batu Ferringhi are just 35 minutes by car.
The guest house offers chic, cubicle-style accommodations for privacy and comfort, ideal for singles and couples. All rooms are air-conditioned, and guests have access to a microwave and utensils. Towels are available for RM1 per towel.
First Personal Experience During a spontaneous trip to Penang, I called Thirty Three Stewart Houze the same day I arrived, and Uncle Yam promptly answered. There was one single bed available for me and my boyfriend to stay for the night. The location is excellent, with many food stalls and tourist spots nearby. The hospitality was top-notch—Uncle Yam was friendly and accommodating, sharing interesting stories about the guest house and Penang’s history, which was meaningful as my dad is a local. The room was RM65 per night without requiring a deposit, making it affordable. The guest house has shared bathroom facilities with free hot/cold drinking water. There are both private rooms and capsule-style beds for budget travelers.
A convenient highlight was the motorbike rental service from AM Sinar Enterprise, offering rentals at RM40 per day with a RM100 deposit—perfect for exploring Penang.
Second Personal Experience Our second stay was just as memorable. After hiking to Penang Hill, we called ahead, and Uncle Yam immediately reserved a room for me and my husband. His warm hospitality continued, and we had a great time chatting about our previous stay and our new chapter as a married couple.
Room and Amenities During both stays, we opted for the queen bed room at RM65 per night, which was affordable with no deposit required. The guest house has both private rooms and capsule-style hostel beds. Rooms with an en-suite shower are available for around RM90 per night. Shared bathroom facilities and free hot/cold drinking water are also provided.
The location remains a major plus, with numerous food stalls and tourist attractions within walking distance.
Price Range:
RM48 - RM86 (Average rates for a standard room)
My room: RM65 per night (queen bed)
Room with queen bed and private shower: RM90 per night
Overall Experience: I thoroughly enjoyed both stays at Thirty Three Stewart Houze. The warm hospitality, convenient location, and cozy atmosphere make it perfect for spontaneous trips. Uncle Yam’s friendliness adds a personal touch that makes the experience even more memorable. Highly recommend this place for anyone...
Read moreThe hotel is really nice, the owners are so friendly and helpful :)||||They also provide tours and maps around the island, and even to Perhentian Island, so you don't need to worry about your itinerary since they are helpful to provide one for you.||||We booked a standard room without window and shared bathroom, in the description, we don't get towel, but once we arrived there, the towels are being provided for us, so don't bother to bring one by your self :)||||The room is ok, air con and fan also work properly, but since the building is an old building (after all it's George Town the UNESCO world heritage list) when it is being opened for the first time it kinda smells like the old room (if you know what I'm talking about :) ) but after that the smells is gone, and we are ok with that because we love the smells of old building :D||||anyway, the shared bathrooms are clean, and the owner will be very happy to explain it to you how to use their facilities (like how to open their door or the heater, though it is easy to find out by yourself)||||Light breakfast also available :) bread with different choices of jams, and wifi is available, too, though in busy time, it is better for you to stay outside near the shared bathroom or downstairs for a better connection.||||Location also nice, since the hotel located behind Chulia Street where you're going to find lots of street food during the night and near Love Lane with their bars but not so noisy like when you directly stay around there.||||After all a very recommended hotel and for sure will go back...
Read moreInfected with bed bugs! Got full of itchy bed bug bites. When stayed there saw the owner taking mattresses out of rooms and didn’t understood why... Now I know, as I got full with bites. Bed bug bites only come red and swollen after 1-2 days... I don’t understand all these good reviews here. The place does not look like the pictures at all. Seeing the photos now that I stayed there, I am so shocked how different they are. The entire place is dirty and messy. Common areas are filled with all kinds of personal stuffs of the owner family living there. Breakfast is white toast and cheap tasteless Tesco jam with faded labels. Wifi sometimes works sometimes not. The girl at the reception was never able to give an answer to any of our questions... maybe it is because the lack of understanding English or maybe she is not from George Town originally but would have appreciated some help. They only give back your key deposit if you show the receipt you got when checked in. So many...
