My husband and I stayed at Mauricia between 18 April to 25 April 2024 with some colleagues. The hotel is beautiful. It also serves a variety of of delicious local cuisine. My appreciation goes to Chef Coulou who made us omelette early one morning when we were in a rush for work. He was delightful and I think a treasure for the hotel. Our rooms were well cleaned and organised thanks to Pamela. Akshay was a polite and hard working porter. Thank you. The next best investment of the hotel will most likely be in training some of their staff on business etiquette and hospitality. This comment is based on the following:
Waiters in the morning looked miserable. When we asked for tea, a waitress just said OK and rushed past without coming back. Unless there is a fire, there is always time to politely address a request. I read in one of the hotel's pamphlets, that Beachcomber was helping to care for stray animals in the region. My husband and I were pleased to read that as we do believe all lives matter and we love animals. One thing that's important for the staff to understand is that what they say and how they behave during their working hours and on hotel premises must be a reflection of the company's values. They are in that time, the company's embassadors...This is applicable to every staff...from the managers to the cooks to the waiters...For dinner one night, I had a few scraps of meat left on my plate and I decided to feed it to two pregnant cats who came close. They were not aggressive and not bothering anybody. A manager that night (it was dark and I could not see his name tag), came to me and snapped "Excuse me, you are not allowed to feed the animals!" While I was shocked to be spoken to that way, I chose to smile and responded "OK, I am sorry..." He then walked past me, just to turn back to me 3 seconds later and snapped "There is a board other there!" After that he stomped his foot so the cat ran away scared.
The thing is - it is not about what he said but more how he said it. If he would have just said "Madam, we please request that you do not feed the animals for xxxx reason. We hope you understand". Acceptable reasons could have been "so as not to attract further stray animals" or "for safety of guests who might be allergic" or even better "the cats are fed appropriate food by our hotel already and guests feeding the cats food cooked for humans may not be best for their diet" etc. While we were there, we saw numerous hotel guests enjoying the company of the two cats. If asked, I am sure guests would have loved to even make a donation so these cats could be fed and get medical care. The cats also keeps rodents away from the hotel. Mauricia would not go bankrupt from feeding two cats. With a member of its staff acting that way, Mauricia failed to show that it truly cares for all lives and is missing out on an opportunity to get the appreciation of clients who are animal lovers. Not to mention, talking down to a hotel guest that way is disrespectful. An important thing to understand is that it is ultimately the hotel guests who are paying the hotel staff's salaries. Without guests, there is no hotel and no job.
This was our second visit to Mauricia and because of reason 2 above (the 5 seconds of disrespectful behaviour from that manager towards us and those two poor cats), it will be our (and extended family's) last stay at Mauricia. My husband will no longer arrange for his company's team members to stay there again during his annual visits to Mauritius. If asked by my high networth clients where they can stay during their visit to Mauritius, I will not recommend Mauricia or if they told me they were considering this hotel, I will tell them about my experience. While Mauricia, may have lost some future business when it comes to us, the best way to make up for it is for its staff to learn that they have to treat their customers politely and those poor animals respectfully. That's a way to reverse the damage and frankly position the hotel well as an establishment worth visiting...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of staying at the Mauritius Beachcomber Hotel for the first time, and it was a truly memorable experience. My trip was recommended by a colleague who had visited the hotel 4-5 years ago, and I can confidently say that it lived up to the high praise.
Room and View:
I stayed in a beautiful sea-facing room, which offered stunning views of the beach. The room was comfortable and well-maintained, providing a perfect retreat after a day of exploration.
Food and Dining:
The variety and taste of the food were excellent. Every meal was a delightful experience, with a wide range of options to choose from. Special thanks to Arwind, Doorga, and Charlotte from the restaurant for their exceptional service and friendliness. Charlotte, in particular, was very fast, cute, and hospitable. I loved her smile.
Beach and Weather:
The beach was fantastic and very swimmable. However, if you are someone who enjoys getting a tan and swimming without feeling chilly, I would recommend visiting around November or December. During my stay, the weather was a bit unpredictable, with short rain showers and occasional wind, which made it less ideal for sunbathing.
Staff and Service:
The staff at the hotel were incredibly polite, friendly, and helpful. Martina from Pilates was a real sweetheart, and Jake and Chris were just as fun and friendly. The spa was another highlight of my stay. I had two massages and a peeling rub, and the Balinese massage with Rita was exceptionally relaxing. Rita's skillful technique and perfect pressure made it one of the best massages I've ever had.
Entertainment:
The entertainment at the hotel was professional and enjoyable, offering delightful performances every night. As a solo traveler, I appreciated the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by the staff, which made me feel comfortable and relaxed.
Tours and Activities:
I booked a private tour through Clarel, who was very helpful and reassuring. My driver and tour guide, Gino, was outstanding. We did a south tour, and Gino provided insightful explanations about the places we visited, the culture, and the history of Mauritius. He also taught me a lot about the island's economic situation, resources, and how people live, giving me a full-picture perspective. It was an educational and enjoyable experience.
Areas for Improvement:
While my stay was mostly enjoyable, there were a couple of areas that could be improved. The boathouse staff were not as welcoming and patient as the rest of the hotel personnel. As someone trying water skiing for the first time, I felt they could have been more explanatory and encouraging.
Additionally, I encountered some pushy sellers on the beach who repeatedly approached me despite my polite refusals. One particular individual was quite intrusive, asking personal questions about my relationship status. This, along with the persistent pareo sellers, was uncomfortable and deterred me from enjoying the beach as much as I would have liked. I am not someone who likes to complain to management, but I believe it would be beneficial for the hotel to address this issue to ensure a more relaxing experience for guests, especially solo travelers.
Conclusion:
Overall, my stay at the Mauricia Beachcomber Hotel was wonderful, and I would love to return. The hotel is clean, the staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is welcoming. Despite a few minor inconveniences, my experience was highly enjoyable, and I look forward to...
Read moreMy family and I have just returned from a holiday and can absolutely confirm this hotel is fantastic. I cannot fault it, from food / the room / kids club / pool / restaurant & bar staff.
My 6 year old & 2 year old loved the kids club. Although, the hotel does not cater for 2 year old I took him now and then for some of the activities which the carers welcomed with smiling faces. Everyday my 6 year old would look forward to the activities at kids club. Win / Illiana / Veena / Samantha are such wonderful carers. All activities they lead made my son happy and excited and looked forward to the next one. My husband and I were super happy because previously with other kids club at other hotels my son refused to go. With this on he did not want to come back with us. Hats off to the kids club, gave my husband and I a peace of mind.
Room: we had the family apartment and again cannot fault it. It was cleaned very well every day. Danielle set up the boys' beds so well by using towels to create animals which made my sons super happy and looked forward to entering the room. The room, bathrooms were cleaned and swept with fresh towels every day. We opted for using the same linen for environmental reasons so I cannot fault change of linen.
Food: we are vegetarian and the Chef (Wesley) went above and beyond to provide us with such wonderful food. We had our special food made every day for every meal. My husband would speak to the Chef about the meals for us including the kids. Chef Wesley and his team were fantastic. I don't know the name of the Indian chef, but I can assure you that if you are Indian wanting pure vegetarian food then you cannot go wrong here. The Indian chef made us such wonderful breakfast / lunch and dinner when we asked for Indian food.
Restaurant/Bar: absolutely loved the waiting staff. Very friendly and approachable. My boys loved and they help to take care of my boys while my husband and I would eat. If you can imagine a 2 year old wanting attention while you as a parent eating is pretty common. But the waiting staff really helped with this and it meant that we could eat the delicious food cooked for us. Most importantly, we were again at peace when my 6 year old would walk around the buffet on his own exploring and thinking what he wants to eat. The staff took care of this and helped my 6 year old. They also helped with my 2 year old who likes to run wild in open space.
reception: again, the staff here were wonderful. Every question answered. Right from tours to booking a taxi to the airport.
@ Mauricia Beachcomber Resort & Spa - I have just mention the few names above unfortunately, I cannot remember all the names of your staff. I would like to say that your staff are biggest asset here. If it wasn't for them, we would not have enjoyed our holiday nor the above review would be given. I'd like to personally thank all your staff named or not named for a fabulously holiday.
I look forward to seeing you...
