I am deeply disappointed with my recent experience at La Botteghita. It began with a sense of discrimination that I cannot ignore. When my fiancé called to make a reservation speaking in Creole, he was told that there were no available slots. However, having not informed me yet about his call, I called shortly after and spoke in French, suddenly multiple time slots were available. At this point I was already questioning whether I still do want to go there and guess what ? I should have followed my instincts.
Upon arriving, the greeting we received was quite rude. Despite having a reservation, we were seated at a table at the far end of the terrace with barely any light, making it impossible to even read the menu. While I understand the concept of dim lighting, it reached a point where we had to use our phone torches to see. When I politely inquired if there was a possibility for another table I was told that they were all reserved when to be honest there were more vacant spots but not the end of it. I asked whether we can have another table light and I was repeatedly interrupted mid-sentence at various moments and told it wasn't possible as they didn't have any more lights left. This response was outrageous, to say the least.
Staying calm, despite the frustrating experience, I hoped the food would make up for it as it had in the past. Unfortunately, the food was excessively salty, a stark contrast to the wonderful meals we've had there before. This visit has certainly changed my view of this place.
As food enthusiasts who enjoy everything from five-star dining to street food, this experience was beyond disappointing. I was initially inclined to overlook this, but after hearing that a friend had a similar experience, I felt compelled to share.
For those seeking a pleasant dining experience in the area, I highly recommend La Voglia Matta and a warm place called La Marinara owned by a local yet makes genuine Italian pizzas Both ensures delightful food and respectful/friendly welcoming without the frustration we encountered at...
Read moreSuch a disappointing experience.
On a Tuesday evening, we visited the restaurant with my mother and two children. We had made a reservation beforehand. Initially, the service was satisfactory, although there was only one other table occupied at that time. We ordered a bottle of wine and Ravioli from the specials board, while the children opted for Carbonara. Our food arrived promptly and was satisfactory. However, the children were not fond of their Carbonara, so we offered them dessert. The portions are smaller here, so consequently we also decided to have dessert. Unfortunately, we were ignored for at least 40 minutes if not longer after several attempts to catch someones attention, eventually, I had to approach the manager and inform him that we had been neglected and requested the bill. The waitress then brought us the bill and admitted that she had been too busy to serve us. It was particularly disappointing considering that there were only about 12 tables, and there was ample staff available. We then left and went up the road to banana grill where we had desserts and coffee with much better service and live music. Furthermore, this restaurant is among the most expensive in Grand Baie. In my opinion, there are significantly better options for food and service. For exceptional cuisine and impeccable service, I recommend La Poivrier. Alternatively, if you seek authentic Italian cooking and a rustic ambiance, Max’s Mamma Mia is an excellent choice. I strongly advise against dining at this...
Read moreWe have ordered mixed buffalo platter which was absolutely delicious. The buffalo itself is super fresh and huge. One thing that I missed in this platter is bit of tomatoes and basil. I think if you add couple slices of tomatoes the dish would taste even better with all these combinations of salami and buffalo. Then we got pizzas which were huge, if we have only known the pizza is that big we have just ordered one pizza for 2 of us to share, especially after taking mixed platter for the starter. It is very subjective to tell how was the pizza, but the dough La Botteghita uses is not my favorite, it is too thin and crispy although my girlfriend enjoyed a lot. One minor thing that I didn’t like is that after we’ve finished the starter the waiter did not replace the fork and knife to the clean one. Instead, he just put the used cutlery on the table (not even on the napkin). This is not very hygienic to put your cutlery on the wooden table. It’s not a big deal to change the cutlery to the fresh one after the starter plate which will make the difference especially to the most fastidious customers. Overall, I think we’ll be back again. At least for the starter...
