*CAUTION BED BUGS * Our stay at Quetzal hostel hasn't been pleasant at all...As soon as we arrived, the girl at the front desk was really cold and didn't really know how to answer our questions about what to do and how to get there. She told us that the dinner is included in the price from 8pm to 9pm. It is 8:40pm so we ask her if it's possible to have a plate. She said no, that dinner was already finish although there should be 20 minutes left. So no dinner for us that night!
We were sleeping in the 7 beds dorm room right next to the front desk (3 bunk-beds and 1 single bed). Even though we were the only two in the room that night, there was a constant flow of people in our room, since the staff uses our bathroom and that other client get in there to use our lockers. The staff doesn't care about slamming this same door day and night. The door doesn't have a lock so we didn't really feel that our stuff was safe.
Moreover, the room smells terrible and the bathroom's toilet doesn't flush, so you would have the pleasure to find some "present" once in a while. The shower had a drizzle jet, so forget washing your hair, or your body for that matter.
But the worst was the second day. Since we got out the evening before, we slept in and we saw the lady "cleaning" our room (3 sweep and putting the sheets back to their place). She didn't change the sheets of the 2 other beds that were occupied that night. She just dusted the fitted sheet and roll the other sheet exactly the same way we founded our bed when we got there the first day. There you go! the bed is all ready for the next person to sleep in! In other words, I'm probably or most likely definitely sleeping, in somebody else's left over...Nice just what I needed !
The day before, my friend woke up with a hundred of bites all over her right arm. We first thought it was a rash or something since she has a sensible skin. But, the next morning, she woke up with double as much bites than the previous morning, and extra bites on her entire body. I'm also starting to have bites on my arms and legs. Maybe bed bugs?! We've notice that the mattresses had been wrapped up in plastic wrap, but we thought it was only as prevention. Hell no! My friend went to talk to the front desk girl, showed her her arm and asked if it could be bed bugs. She told us : "they just wrapped the beds couple days ago so it's normal if the bugs are coming out. I also have few of those once in a while, you'll see it goes away eventually..." Whhhhhaat?! NORMAL?! Few bites?! Have you seen her arm, it is covered in bites it is definitely not just a few. A little bit later, an other guy who works there said "well it's not that bad, some people had them in their luggages..." Thanks for the encouraging words bro. So if I understand, you knew and still you let people sleep in that room Infected with bed bugs without a heads up!! This room should have been sealed and treated properly before even considering letting other customers in. And they don't even change the bed sheets! I don't even want to know what is happening in the whole place, it is just disgusting.
So we had to spent one of our last two days in the emergency room so we could get a treatment for the bed bugs. Back to the hostel we asked for a refund for the night we won't be sleeping there (no way I'm staying there longer). The manager said no, cause he wouldn't see why he should give us a refund, that it was normal for a hostel to have bed bugs and that he has some bite too sometimes and it doesn't matter. When we went back into the room, at least 2 other people were staying in the very same room full of bed bugs even though the employees know what is happening in there...
In conclusion, I wouldn't recommend this hostel to any one even my worst enemy. Avoid it at all cost or you might bring home more than...
Read moreUnpredictable, rude & lying owner - spare yourself the trouble & don’t go. Disclaimer: we didn’t stay at the place despite a reservation, we got kicked out… Summary: the main reason I would advise to NOT GO is that I got DEATH THREATS and images of mutilated bodies from the owner’s contacts accusing me of violence that has not happened. This hotel seems to have quite some good reviews, but rightly so also some very bad ones, so it seems very unpredictable what you get here. Better be safe, spare yourself the trouble & go somewhere else! Back story: Me & my girlfriend arrived by car and the owner ‚welcomed‘ us outside, already passive aggressive because we arrived without updating her again on our arrival time while arriving at a totally reasonable hour (6.30pm). After few sentences, she (Monica Moray) asked us to park in a designated parking slot on the street, right in front of the hotel (because there was a surveillance camera). It was difficult for us to park with our rental car & the fact that the owner was watching and commenting on our driving was not helpful and rude. The atmosphere got a bit tense when we firmly asked her to let us park the way we’d like. After a few words back and forth Monica insulted as („you’re horrible people“) because we „didn’t know how to communicate or behave“; also storming into the house and screaming those type of comments. After a short but heated discussion from both sides („how dare you call your guests horrible“), the owner told us to leave and better stay somewhere else; as we felt very uncomfortable by that time, we agreed despite having a reservation. Note that AT NO POINT has there been any violence involved from our side; However, just a few hours later, we received violent messages (quoting:„I will kill you“), accusing me that I tried to hit the woman. After blocking the contact I received more messages from a different number with violent images (dead / mutilated bodies), threatening us. apparently attempts to intimidate and...
Read moreWe stayed here for a few days over New Year's.
Pros - The place was easy to find. The staff were extremely friendly and gave you lots of advice on where to go, what to see etc. The WiFi / internet was pretty awesome. They gave a basic free breakfast and dinner everyday which was very welcomed. A small pool (though we didn't use it) and a bar. An air condition and fans in the dorm was pretty sweet.
Ok - There is not much in terms of things to do and restaurants etc near this location. You will need to take the bus to go to the Hotel area of Cancun. The drinks sold at the hostel bar, were not really cheap, pretty much the same as outside. They had lockers, but they were not very strong and could have easily been broken into.
Cons - The toilets were not very clean and one if the shared ones always had trouble flushing, which meant there were always presents left for the next person. The dorm rooms had no doors and didn't feel very secure. Some mattresses were old and soft and not as hard as the others. While it was not at all dirty, it didn't feel very clean either in general. The staff would sleep in spare beds in our room throughout the...
