Hostal Fungi Casa Rosa CDMX — Hotel in Mexico City

I spent 13 days at Hostal Fungi and overall had a wonderful experience there. As a 63 year old solo traveler who had not stayed in a hostal in over 40 years, picking a hostal over other lodgings felt like a bit of a gamble, but I was attracted by the fact that there would be communal spaces where I could talk to other guests and staff, free coffee and access to a kitchen. All of these turned out to be great reasons to have chosen this place. I met many travelers from various countries and enjoyed hearing their stories and sharing ideas for adventures. I came to Mexico to study Spanish so being able to interact with the staff in Spanish was a nice bonus. When I decided to leave my Spanish school and instead work with private tutor my second week, the hostal graciousy allowed us to do our classes up on the lovely rooftop terrace.

I had a private room with shared bathroom. At first I was worried that access to the bathrooms would be difficult since there are only two full baths and one half bath, but this did not turn out to be a problem. I never once had to wait to get a shower when I wanted one.

The staff in the hostal were pleasant and helpful and they worked hard to keep the facility clean and tidy.

I was not very excited about the food options for breakfast (bread with jam, a yogurt and a piece of fruit), but the hostal provided a large refrigerator for use by guests so I was able to buy, eat and cook whatever I wanted. The coffee was excellent, and I was grateful to have it available every morning while I was doing my morning yoga routine (by the way they have yoga mats available to borrow).

Last year and the year prior, I stayed in Air B and Bs in other Mexican cities while I did two weeks of Spanish classes. While they were fine, I felt socially isolated after my classes ended. In the hostal, I had plenty of social interaction which added greatly to the pleasure of my trip.

Cons: The double bedroom with a private bathroom was truly subpar. The bathroom doorframe is not completely watertight and after a shower, water leaks out onto the bedroom floor through a crack in the caulking. The sink in the bathroom is so tiny it’s impossible to wash your face in it without splashing water onto the floor. In order to wash my face, I had to use a common bathroom.

There is not a hairdryer provided in the room. There seems to only be one hairdryer for the whole hostel. The bathroom needs hooks directly outside the door for towels.

There is little privacy in this room as the social rooftop space is right outside and the windows and doors let all kinds of noise through. Would not advise this room if you’re a couple.

Pros: The bed is reasonably comfortable and I appreciate the bedside shelves and conveniently located outlets. The inhabitants are generally peaceful and quiet and respectful. There is free breakfast, and there is a free daily mezcal shot but it’s a bit of a switch and bait since it’s in a bar that’s 4 blocks away. There are a lot of pre-curated Google Maps lists for you to have a guided exploration around CDMX.

Servicio atención al cliente, por parte de la señorita que me atendió entre las 4 y 5 p.m. fue excelente, lamentablemente no puedo decir maravillas de las otras 2 personas de los otros 2 turnos, la segunda señorita tenia cara de muy pocos amig@s (mejorar esto), y del joven tenia cara de desvelado en 3 ocasiones tuve que ir a tocar la puerta que esta por la cocina (casi no le vi en recepción).

Habitaciones no tengo ningúna queja ni reclamo, solo sugerencias para mejorar: Tener una zona para dejar las maletas de ruedas ya que en el locker no caben, los escalones para subir a la otra cama sugiero cambiarlos (no sean de madera).

BAÑO PRIMER PISO: muy limpio aqui sugiero que pongan un tapete en la zona para lavarse las manos, dentro de la regadera poner esas cintas antiderrepantes ya que el piso lo senti muy liso, también sugiero que en recepción les comente a lxs huespedes que tarda poco en salir el agua caliente aproximadamente 2 a 3 minutos pero antes de eso indicar como se debe abrir la llave de la regadera (ya que abria la de enmedio y no salia agua), poner un aromatizante como en el baño de planta baja.

BAÑO PLANTA BAJA: lo unico que sugiero es tener un poco mas grande la zona para lavarse las manos ya que el que tienen esta muy pequeño y dificulta lavarse las manos.

IMPORTANTE: Recalcar a los Huespedes no dejar nada afuera de las habitaciones, esto lo comento ya que el huesped de la habitación de alado dejo afuera sus tennis y esto podria ocasionar un accidente. Que el reglamento aplique tanto para lxs huespedes como personal que labora en el HOSTAL (ponerse los audifonos y no hacer ruido con reuniones virtuales, lo digo porque esto paso por la mañana en recepción).

RECLAMO: Ocupe la caja de plastico para poner unas cosas en el refri, a esta caja le puse como me gusta que me llamen (lo hice en la noche), y al otro día me percato que borraron 2 letras, (se que no puse mi nombre con el cual reserve pero si puse mi apellido), aqui si pido que respeten esto y no vuelva a suceder en otra ocasión, sobre esto debieron haber leido bien mi INE (porque me la pidieron en recepción) y ahi claramente decia que soy una persona NO BINARIA, sugiero que en recepción REGISTRO DE HUESPEDES pregunten también si quieren que les hablen por su nombre, alias o preguntar cual es su pronombre EL/ELLA/ELLE, con esto que hicieron dudaria en recomendarlos a la Población LGBTTTIQ+ para quedarse con ustedes.

En ningún hotel me piden mi INE ni mucho menos copian datos a la computadora, cuando hago reservaciones desde la app de BOOKING, se supone que ahi tengo mis datos verificados, lo que hicieron NO ME GUSTO porque no se si vayan a cuidar mis DATOS que registraron (para esto deben entregar una hoja y firmarla, aceptando de proporcionar datos de mi INE), lo que hacen la mayoría de hotel aun teniendo reservación desde APPS te entregan un formato para firmar y poner tu nombre ya sea con el que hiciste la reservación (mostrando tu folio de reserva) o algun alias, asi como también MOTIVO de estancia: trabajo o vacaciones y también de que estado o pais les visitamos. ESTA PARTE SI DEBEN MEJORARLA.

En lo personal creo que procure acatar el reglamento que me dieron a leer en recepción pero lo ideal es que lo peguen atras de las puertas de las habitaciones, para que lxs huespedes hagan lo mismo ya que también toda la noche hicieron ruido con eso de abrir, cerrar puertas...
