Oldfashioned hotel at a unique location: just beyond the noise and hassle of the city, across the river, on the way to Swyambhunat. Beautiful architecture with traditional Newari woodwork, splendid garden with much green and space to sit quietly and ample parking space. This is a real attraction in a city which has so little green and peace! Rooms are rather basic; even the 'deluxe rooms" have no TV, no safe, no AC, no refrigerator, basic lighting. Cleaning is done well (except on saturday). The restaurant is basic as well: breakfast buffet is all right, menu otherwise very limited, certainly compared with the range available in many other restaurants. Staff are very relaxed though pleasant, but have limited knowledge e.g. on taxi rates, destinations, shops, flights - and little desire to expand their knowledge or services. Read moreI stayed a few days at Hotel Varja. The hotel's exterior is nice and the people working there are nice. It's located a bit outside Thamel but still walkable with the traffic dodging. However, the interior of the hotel is dated and dirty. I had a lot of hair on my bath mat and had to request for a clean one. The food there are just so so but overpriced. The room is overpriced as well and does not include breakfast which is also overpriced. I would stay away from here until they fix up and clean the rooms properly. It's got a lot of potential but right now, it's just a run-down...
