With it's near uninterrupted lakefront views, you could, if you wished, spend a week here without moving. There's a good kitchen, dishwasher and a decent sized lounge. There's also a communal laundry on the premises. No need to drive - the town centre is an easy, flat, 10 minute walk to all the restaurants and tours. We walked from here to the water taxi then did the half day Kepler return track back to the hotel, and we walked to dinner at Redcliff and lunch in town. We only used the car for long trips or to stock up at the supermarket. Free parking right at the back door, well off the road, and good free, wifi (though it was sometimes a little hard to log onto, and not super fast - a problem about to be fixed by the arrival of high speed internet into Te Anau). The only suggestions I'd make are that they add a few pans to the kitchen selection, which was limited. Be careful about your room choice - first floor views are superior to those on the ground floor as they lift you above the road and landscaping. Also, our ground floor 1 bedroom room, next to the office, had restricted views due to landscaping. That said, we still got a good view of the lake. We also noticed that all the rooms seemed to be furnished differently, so I assume each is owned seperately and the site managed centrally. As such, you may get a different standard of furniture, bedding and kitchen items. Hosts were lovely, welcoming and with great local information, and the room was spotless everytime we returned. One difference of opinion we had was the bathroom - it was a clean, recently renovated and spotless module-type room, with panelled walls. He thought it was great, she thought it...
Read moreThe rooms at the Tanara block of Fiordland Lakeview Motel were really nice and had a good amount of space.
Te Anau while charming, had a lot of accommodations that were really showing their age, so this new build with modern amenities was something that I really appreciated.
Located on Lakefront Drive, the room boasted a commanding view of Lake Te Anau. It also had a fully equipped kitchen that was a joy to prepare meals in. The automatic coffee machine and hi-tech fireplace in the living space were nice luxury touches.
The bathroom came with a full set of toiletries that even included facial wash! It also had a tub with built-in TV and a washer dryer (and laundry capsules). The dryer was a little slow as the drying cycle took about 3 hours but it worked well and made it convenient for us to do our laundry. There was a separate toilet next to the entrance.
The only part of the studio that I did not like was this glass strip at the main door that let in light at night and also felt intrusive as there were no shades or curtains. Otherwise, I really enjoyed...
Read moreWe stayed in an upstairs room of the northernmost block, which was only built a few years ago. Everything was immaculate. The room had a great kitchen with a full-size fridge freezer, microwave, small stove top and sophisticated coffee maker that takes whole beans and grinds them itself. The bathroom has a front loading washer drier. Clothes liquid was provided.
The bathroom layout has its quirks. The toilet is in a separate room near the main door, so after using the toilet you need to head down the hall and into the main bathroom to wash your hands (or use the kitchen sink). The bath plug and taps are at the furthest end of the bath, so can only be reached by climbing into the bath. Both are just odd design decisions rather than problems.
The room has a balcony with a fantastic view over the main road to the lake and mountains beyond. It is only a few minutes walk to the center of town.
The hotel has ample parking. The room has a tiny safe that is only useful for a few small items,...
