Stay In Tekapo Backpackers — Hotel in South Island

I called early evening to book a room for the night as I was doing a bike packing tour and was in a bad physical state. I asked for a private room as I was going to turn up at 1am. The charge was $200, which was ok as I stayed in an amazing place the year before that even gave me my own slippers! However, I turned up to a dorm room with people sleeping in the room! Not cool! I did not go in as I did not know who it was and knowing I still needed to shower and faf around was worried about waking the people in there. I proceeded to use old hand towels to dry myself, no towels supplied for my $200 a night ‘private’ room, and had some food in a dirty communal kitchen. After this, I was just gonna sleep on a couch on the communal area when a person in the room came out and asked what I was doing. I told my story and they informed me they will vacate the room as they are staff! Ended up getting to bed at about 3am, only had 2 hours sleep, had to be on the road again early. We had booked this hostel for our holiday, en-route there was a 1 in 100 year storm that closed roads all over the south island. It was impossible for us to make it there. We called and explained the situation and the receptionist said thank you for the early notification so we can rebook the room, and explained how to apply for a refund. 3 days later we called back to follow up as we hadn't heard anything and were told that the manager had decided to charge us for the room we weren't able to stay in. I can only assume they double dipped and rebooked our room to reap in good profits. They advised us that had we cancelled 3 days before they would have refunded us however as far as I know not even the weather man can predict what's happening 3 days from now. The hostel was clean and located in a great area, but needs lots of improvements. First of all, two of the three bathrooms were being painted at the same time. That means that only 1 bathroom and shower was available for the whole hostel.

Secondly, beds should be assigned when you check in and not chosen freely by guests. On my second night, another guest took my bed and the sheets of the only other available one in the room (used by another guest the night before) were not changed by 8pm and I had to call reception to bring me clean sheets (I wasn’t given a clean pillow case though).

There are no lockers in the hostel, which is very inconvenient if you stay in a shared bedroom.
