I give Gran Evenia Panama Hotel a 5 star rating for quality, and recommend it for the cleanliness, convenient location, attractive styling, great beds, excellent food (particularly the breakfast) & nice service. Nonetheless, I think this hotel is a great 4-star class property as to the level of luxury & amenities, but do not agree that it is a“5-Star” luxury hotel for the reasons detailed below.
The hotel and restaurant service is outstanding, especially by Panama standards. The food at the hotel restaurant is excellent, tasty and made with great ingredients. The Gran Evenia is about 6 months old, in great condition, & in a neighborhood with lots of nearby shops, bars, & restaurants. Transportation is easily accessible, especially Uber.
The breakfast buffet is remarkably good. It’s worth getting the bed-and-breakfast room rate, if available. They offer very high quality food selections, including a variety of fruits, terrific imported cold meats and cheeses, hot meats, hot Panamanian delicacies, great coffee, juices, eggs, cereals, yoghurt & and an impressive variety of freshly made breads and pastries.
We enjoyed the Modern European styling, furniture and decoration. The bed is amazingly comfortable. However, the pillows were all too firm and large for my taste. Nice size refrigerator. Desk was comfortable, with good light & ample power outlets. There are night tables & reading lamps on each side of the bed & handy electrical outlets. Excellent large screen TV, decent selection of channels, including some in English. Coffeemaker brewed tasty Panamanian coffee in porcelain cups. Shower has ample hot water & pressure. Toiletries are not consistent with the 5-star luxury claim. They are in plastic wall-mount pumps with a single combination hair/body wash in the shower. Towels are good, but certainly not 5-star plush. It would have been nice if they gave an extra towel or two, without having to request it. Similarly, an iron & board are available only by request. Rooftop pool & bar is a nice place to relax and socialize. Air conditioner is nearly silent. The rooms & common areas are kept extremely clean.
Our room was a bit smaller than at most other local hotels in this price class. Hallways on the guestroom floors are open to the outdoors, so are not air conditioned; there is little air movement. In tropical Panama, that means the halls are very hot, stuffy & humid. So are the elevator interiors. The ends of the hallways are particularly airless & not comfortable. They should at least install ceiling fans.
Generally, the guest rooms were designed for appearance and aesthetics, and not so much for functionality. Door to enter the bathroom is frosted glass, does not lock, & has wide gaps all the way around, offering less privacy than a regular door. The toilet is square, with a small square seat. Looks stylish, but is not very comfortable. The flush buttons required much hand strength to operate. The shower has a partial wall made of glass, with no door or curtain over the entrance. So water sometimes splashed onto the floor in front of that opening, wetting slippers & bathmat. Light switches are fussy to operate and hard to figure out; the settings make little sense. Again, they are designed more for appearance than function. For example, the closet has a dramatic-looking backlight. But it does not illuminate the dark closet area. The closet and shelves have no door or enclosure, so the clothing is visible at all times. The drawers are difficult to open, and the drawer pull handles are uncomfortable with the edges digging into one’s hand. The in-room safe was large enough for a laptop and valuables, and includes a helpful internal light. Wifi was free and easy to access, with very good speed. Again, it was not quite a “5-star” level high-speed internet connection, but adequate for steaming standard def videos at 480p or downloading business files...
Read moreWas very underwhelmed by this experience. I would not recommend if you like to spend the day outside of the hotel room and then come home and shower before dinner, because your room will not have been cleaned at a reasonable time. One day, housekeeping arrived at 4:40pm, and we asked if they could return in thirty minutes. We were told no, as the cleaning staff would be leaving at 5pm and it was either they enter now or our room not be cleaned at all. The next day, I spotted housecleaning 5 doors down at 3pm. I went to the roof to give the staff time to clean my room, but when I returned at ~4pm, they were working in the room directly next to me. Yet, my room had not been cleaned yet (the room they were working on was 7 doors down from where I had seen them an hour ago, so it appeared they had skipped my room). It wasn't until 5:30pm that they finally entered my room (even though the day before they had claimed they had to leave promptly at 5). In addition to this disappointing timing, there were multiple times throughout the week where our towels had been taken and were not fully replaced (missing the shower mat, only one hand towel despite the fact it was a 2-bed room, etc.) This delayed timing was not just confined to housekeeping. On our first day, the rooftop bar was scheduled to open at 5 pm, but only finally opened at 5:30pm at the request of someone from my group. ||In addition, the rooms lacked basic amenities such as lotion, tissues, and a trashcan outside of the bathroom. While the hotel did provide wifi, I ended up consistently using my phone as a hot spot due to how slow their wifi was. During our weeklong stay, there were also multiple power...
