This is the hotel restaurant in the relatively new Gran Evenia, a European brand. The excellent service and great food benefit from the European influence. The restaurant serves tasty breakfast, lunch and dinner in a pleasant, relaxing garden atmosphere.
The breakfast buffet is remarkably good. It’s worth getting the bed-and-breakfast room rate at the hotel, if available. They offer very high quality food selections, including a variety of fruits, terrific imported cold meats and cheeses, hot meats, hot Panamanian delicacies, great coffee, juices, eggs, cereals, yoghurt & and an impressive variety of freshly made breads and pastries. The whole-grain baguette bread was fresh and warm from the oven every morning. It is the best bread I have eaten in many visits to Panama City. The house-made picante (hot sauce)—available on request—was also remarkably good. The patacones (known in some places as tostones) were absolutely perfect. Again, they are the best I have had in Panama, maybe anywhere!
Outdoor seating is available, but be sure to choose a table under an awning, in case it rains. Some of the outdoor tables have no rain protection, and you could get soaked. Fortunately, we were able to relocate to a sheltered, dry unoccupied table when one of the strong Panama rain storms suddenly started. If the place is crowded, that option would not be available, so choose your outdoor seats strategically.
We particularly liked the freshly made mixed salads topped with excellent tuna, which we ordered with their top-quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar, instead of the usual heavier dressing. The pork medallions topped with crispy Iberian ham bits and a ham-flecked sauce with fabulous mashed potatoes was also super tasty. The only things less than stellar at the restaurant were the size of the portion of meat on the pork dish (less generous than most places in Panama), and the Sancocho, which was nicely presented and very tasty; but the broth tasted more like a great French onion soup than a traditional version of this iconic Panamanian dish. The service in the restaurant was consistently terrific. We made a few off-menu special requests that the staff happily provided at reasonable prices. For example, we requested take-out sandwiches on the day of our air travel. They were securely packaged, prepared exactly as requested and ready at the promised time. They were also delicious, probably better sandwiches than one could find at any other restaurant in...
