King David Suites by Madeira Sun Travel — Hotel in Funchal

This place is a scam, be warned! The rooms are very noisy, and I got ripped off on my money. Below are the details:

I stayed here in July. First, this is not a hotel but a residence as I later found out. This means that there is no 24h reception and if you need to leave in the morning (e.g. to catch the morning ferry to Porto Santo) there is nobody there to interact with.

At night you will find the rooms are very noisy (with the windows fully closed) because the main road is just in front of the rooms, and Madeira has lots of old cars and loud scooters driving all night long in the town on cobblestone. So if you want to have a quiet night's sleep and recharge for the next day's hike or fun activity, you're in for a surprise as there is no way to rest properly there regardless of the room (I had changed 2, both had the same issue plus music and noise from the bar downstairs until 4am).

The hotel charges a 100€ deposit in cash upon arrival, and as mentioned, there is nobody there in the morning to give you your money back if you need to catch the 7am Ferry to Porto Santo (the only morning ferry to the island). They also don't offer a receipt for this deposit so it is hard to prove you actually paid it. In my case it took 2 months and a lot of effort to recover my deposit money by having Booking.com intermediate this, because the property stopped replying to my messages or calls (and indeed they were not replying to the Booking.com team either, until they used a special option they have to force them to reply lest they close the listing).

Finally, I had a second pre-booking with this hotel a few days later, as my holiday had consisted of a couple of days in Madeira, then some days in Porto Santo, and finally back to Madeira again (naively pre-booking the same hotel). Upon seeing the problems with the noisy rooms during my first stay, I asked the hotel before checking out from my first booking (i.e. before the Porto Santo part) if it is possible to cancel the reservation taking place a few days later and receive a refund. They agreed in writing, and persuaded me to initiate the cancelation via Booking.com claiming they cannot do it, but committed to refund my money for this upcoming reservation. In the end they never refunded the money they promised, despite this written proof. They stopped communicating with me, and to the Booking.com team they invoked the no refunds cancelation policy on their listing.

Bottom line: this is a scam,...

We enjoyed our stay. A small and clean room is fully consistent with its price. Very well-equipped place with high-quality kitchen stove, coffee machine, and kettle. There is an opportunity to wash clothes in a separate laundry room, also room had a very nice balcony overlooking the port. Welcome gifts were left by owners🥰 Convenient communication with employees via WhatsApp. Very good location of the hotel, there are many good restaurants, bars and supermarkets nearby. It is very convenient to get to any excursions, observation decks, and boat trips from it.

The downside is that there is no place to dry things after laundry, there is a lot of humidity in the room, so things don’t have time to dry. Due to the high humidity, upon returning to the room with the closed windows, an unpleasant smell appears, but there is an air conditioner that saves the situation.

Some reviews say that the hotel is noisy due to its central location, but throughout our stay, it was never noisy...

Very comfy and well furnished apartment for 2 of us for five nights. Had all the amenities we needed and were able to make breakfast, packed lunch and an evening meal when we wanted a night in.
