Worst sushi I have ever had. Calling it sushi is a stretch. It's like the chef doesn't know what sushi is and is just doing it by copying a picture. Out of about 36 rolls... only about half had fish! lol. Cream cheese and pineapple sushi? ummm yummy
Oh don't forget the cream cheese and jam sushi!!!! Omg at least I got a good laugh over that one. If you look at the picture it looks good. You think its maybe creamed horseradish with a healthy dollop of roe on top. My god the reality was different.
The tuna nigiri was abysmal. I think they use the same tuna they do for the carpaccio. So not only is the tuna about 1mm thick.. you get a even more overcooked rice because of it. Supermarket sushi is more generous with the fish.
Aaaand finally... the white fish was DEFINATELY from frozen. I think that's why we waited so long. The chef taking cheap cuts from the freezer and defrosting them. It was a waterlogged, flavourless piece of nothingness. If you want to simulate the experience for yourself and save some money... try soaking a piece of cardboard in water for 48hrs until it starts to lose rigidity.. then eat it. You can now feel my pain.
Wish I waited half an hour longer until Akua opens just round the corner. Their menu looks interesting.
Also if you walk 30 mins west of Funchal city centre there is a restaurant called 'Window to Asia' that I've had the best plate of food I have ever had. Grilled octopus in a rich sauce with tapioca peals and puffed rice crisps. unbelievable! So smokey and rich. I would go back to madeira just for that restaurant.
PS. a lot of places aren't open...
Read moreCame here for my birthday dinner for a change up from Portuguese food and it did not disappoint! I have tried a few sushi places throughout Europe and I thought this was one of the better ones. (I have traveled around Japan though and nothing quite compares, but this was good for Portugal!)
We came on a Tuesday night at 19:00 and it was quite empty, but there were no cruise ships in the day we came. The night before we saw it was busier. I would recommend making a reservation online anyways just in case. Inside/outside seating.
Good Japanese options from gyoza to poke bowls. My husband and I started with the chicken gyoza which was pretty good, crispy on the outside and good flavor. There were 5 in the portion. If you have bigger appetites 1 starter per person is probably better. We both got a poke bowl, which we thought were generous sizes (although we have small appetites). Good amount of fish. Fish was super fresh and so was everything else in the bowl. I couldn't finish mine. I love the names of them based on planets! We were too full for dessert.
We noticed some takeaway orders (uber eats, etc.) while we were here, so we assumed locals must order from here.
Was overall good, attentive service, clean, nice atmosphere and fresh fish! Would come back if I wanted...
