Madeira Gems Apartments — Hotel in Funchal

We enjoyed staying at the Madeira Gems apartment. The location was perfect; close to the main sights e.g. it took us about 12 min walk to the cable car to get up to the Monte. Around the corner was the shopping mall and its supermarket and for dinner we went to India Gate (twice) and Americano (the name is a bit weird as we had amazing food which was in no way American).

Luiz and Cesar from reception were so friendly and welcoming that we immediately felt at home. Luiz went out to the sidewalk to find us after we had some difficulty to find the entrance of the hotel. Please note to enter “Hotel Madeira” into your Google map search. You can park in front of the hotel and check in. Parking is a right turn (one way road) away.

We had the apartment on the top floor which was very quiet especially during the night. There was the Flowerfestival going on near by with daily nightly musical performances and it was a nice background entertainment while sitting on the terrace. The entertainment ended 22.30/23-ish and the windows cancelled out all noise once closed. The bedroom faced the small alley in the back so noise during sleeping time was never an issue.

I particularly liked the terrace. The mattress was a bit firm for my taste but my husband liked it and we both slept very well.

There is construction going on at the right side of the apartment but it didn’t bother us much. They start at 8am-ish. By that time we already went for breakfast. Construction crew took a long lunch. They continued until 17/17.30 o’clock. I have to say we were really worried about the noise but at the end it was not so bad. I guess if depends what kind of work they are doing.

The location and the beautiful designed interior of the apartment and the friendly and welcoming staff made up for it.

My friends and I rented one of the apartments at Madeira Gems. The apartment was beautiful, however our stay, unfortunately was not. I normally don't write reviews like this since I know things can be out of peoples control, however this was very disturbing and disheartening. There was construction in the connecting building that started from 7 am and went to about 7 pm every day we were there. We had an extremely long day and checked in late on our check in day, the hotel staff did not notify us of the construction so we were pleasantly surprised the next early morning, the website does not state any construction going on and when we reached out the next day, no apology or alternative option was rendered. We were unable to sleep, talk or even be in the apartment due to the noise and had to vacate every day very early. When I spoke to the manager, Sonia, she told me that the construction had just started and they'll see what they can do. This was not accurate information as the construction workers told us they had been there for over a month. To top if off, Sonia kept interrupting our days by insisting to come into the apartment and pulling me aside when I was at the pool and argued with me in front of other guests. It all felt very inappropriate and there were many ways they could have gone about this from the beginning by notifying us of the construction, giving us the option to cancel our reservation, or accommodating us in their sister hotel across the street -- none of these options were offered. Sonia even told me they are having trouble getting bookings because of the noise and asked me to report them to the police - which I did not do. Again, it all felt very in...
