A 5 star hotel? Maybe not. Buyer beware.
The most important thing in a hotel for me is a comfortable room where I can get a good night's sleep. This is not that.
Tivoli seems to struggle with its identity. Is it a good hotel, restaurant, or nightclub?
The lobby is beautiful, as are their restaurants. The rooftop bar is a cool hangout. There's also a restaurant on the rooftop and the food is good. However, don't expect to have any intimate conversation during your meal. If you yell loud enough, the person beside you will be able to hear what you're saying.
The hotel rooms are no better or different than what you can find at a cheap hotel in America, like the Hampton or Fairfield Inn. Don't believe me? Compare pictures.
The courtyard view rooms are a joke. There is no courtyard. There is nothing green. All you can see are roof vents and other hotel rooms across the way.
We called and upgraded our room to the river view for an additional €55 per night. I've included that picture. If you look hard, you can see water in the distance. However, what you get the best view of is an alley and the back of other buildings. The rooms however, are bigger than the courtyard rooms. They can actually fit two chairs and a small table. That's the €55 difference.
They do a good job with the nightclub, or discotheque as I call it. There, you will find good seating, a great view and have super loud BPM type music playing all night long and into the wee hours of the morning. Expect music up to 2am on Fridays and Saturdays and 1am on Sundays.
I checked in on a Friday and checked out Monday morning. Super bad idea. My river view room was on the 6th floor. Their nightclub is on the 9th floor. I now know exactly what it's like to sleep in a discotheque. The constant and irregular thumping was prevalent each night of my stay. All the money they spent on nice carpeting and felt lined walls to dampen noise in the halls couldn't overcome their 9th floor disaster. I can't imagine the pounding their 7th and 8th floor guests get. Impossible to sleep. I called each evening to see if they could maybe turn down the volume a little after 10pm. Those requests were denied. Apparently, their non-hotel nightclub guests are a higher priority. On Sunday when I found out I could expect this until 1am, a manager came to address the issue. She said I could leave my bags in my room on the 6th floor and she could offer me a bed on the fifth floor. Are you laughing yet? As loud as the thumping was on the 6th floor, I'm sure the fifth would be no better and who would leave their bags? Lowering the volume a little after 10pm was out of the question.
The Tivoli will get you a baggage handler, room service, a loud restaurant onsite and fantastic breakfast. You can also expect deceptive advertising, super expensive rooms $600+ US, €550+, small rooms with lousy to average views, a noisy BPM nightclub and no way to sleep until after 2am. If this sounds good, the Tivoli is perfect for you.
No hotel guest cares if there's a nightclub on site. Let's get that straight.
Their service and their people were par excellent. It's the only reason I struggle with giving them this rating, but I have to rate this as a hotel, not a nightclub, not a restaurant. That's not what I came for. That's not what I bought.
If you're coming for a good night's sleep, find another place and then visit here if you want a good bite to eat, some super loud BPM music and no ability to have a conversation at dinner. And whoever gave them a five-star rating needs to spend a night at any average Hampton Inn or Marriott in America for $78 US, €70. After a good night's rest, you may reconsider your 5 star...

I so appreciate beautifully run grand hotels with interesting histories in great locations. I have been fortunate to be able to enjoy a number of them so far this year, including this special hotel where my wife and I stayed a few months ago.
For people interested in the history of the hotel, I can highly recommend the following publication which can be downloaded free of charge:-
“Hotel Tivoli Lisboa: tradition and modernity in Lisbon's hotel industry, 1933-2008”
Knowing of and appreciating the hard work and aims of the founders of great hotels enhances our stays. We very much appreciate the management and staff at this hotel and the review which follows has been written by my daughter who has just enjoyed a holiday at the hotel with her partner departing August 2nd. Prior to this, my daughter and her partner were with me at another wonderful Portuguese hotel, Reid’s Palace in Madeira. From there she travelled straight to Lisbon and this is her review….
Arriving at the hotel later than originally planned, check-in was so smooth that we were settled in our beautiful room within 10 minutes. Pedro, the receptionist, was so welcoming and told us everything we needed to know about the hotel and all of the facilities.
Our room ticked every box: big comfy bed, lots of amenities, great view, modern bathroom with a superb shower… couldn’t have asked for more.
The entire hotel is beautiful, extremely well appointed, immaculate and spotlessly clean. All the staff are friendly and make you feel so welcome and at home.
We headed to dinner on the roof at ‘Seen’ at 8pm, which totally lived up to its’ impressive reputation. The receptionist, Rita, was so welcoming and our waiter was great. When I asked for a wine recommendation based on my tastes, he recommended a really nice Portuguese sparkling wine which we really enjoyed! The atmosphere was lively and vibrant and the food was excellent. We thought the menu itself was very well curated!
After dinner we went to the rooftop bar, where we had a table overlooking Lisbon. Again, the reputation is justified because the view was wonderful, the vibes were cool, and the staff were lovely.
The next morning we headed to breakfast. Again, our waiter was just lovely and she made the experience so enjoyable. There were lots of gluten free options, the buffet was great …and even featured beautiful Bordallo Pinheiro bowls.
Pool area is very cool, live music , really good atmosphere, a special haven in the middle of the city
Went back to sky bar the next afternoon to experience it during the day - again had a great table
Live music in the lobby was such a nice touch.
Being an exceptionally well located hotel, right in the middle of a prime part of the city, if a view is important to you it is best to pay the small amount amount extra for an Avenue view. a lovely hotel which I know I will revisit on numerous future occasions outside visit Lisbon once a year. Thank you to the management and staff for making our...

From the moment we arrived, our stay at Tivoli Avenida da Liberdade was nothing short of extraordinary. Upon pulling up to the entrance, two attentive portiers immediately greeted us, opened our car doors, and took care of both our luggage and vehicle. Their reassuring words—“Sir, please don’t worry about your car or your luggage anymore, we’ll handle everything”—set the tone for the seamless experience that followed.
What truly distinguishes a five-star hotel is its staff, and Tivoli excels in this regard. At every turn, we were made to feel effortlessly cared for. Whether presenting a request or mentioning a concern, the response was always swift, discreet, and unfailingly accommodating.
We made use of many of the hotel’s services—standard and beyond—and every need was met without hesitation. A particularly thoughtful gesture came when my wife, having purchased a dress while out shopping, required alterations. The hotel promptly arranged for a seamstress, allowing her to wear it during our stay. That level of attention to detail was consistent throughout.
The spa experience stood out as a highlight for my wife, who has sampled spa services around the world on nearly every trip. She confidently declared Tivoli’s to be the finest she’s ever experienced.
Our stay coincided with my birthday, and thanks to the heartfelt efforts of Pedro E. and Pedro F., the occasion became truly memorable. I’d also like to extend my sincere thanks to Carolina C. for further enriching our visit.
Our room offered breathtaking views over the iconic Avenida da Liberdade. Mornings began with an exquisite breakfast buffet featuring an array of options, complemented by à la carte selections like omelets from the kitchen—perfect for guests staying several nights and seeking variety.
With its storied heritage, refined ambiance, and impeccable service, it's no wonder the famed Beatriz Costa made this hotel her home for 30 years. Given the opportunity, I would gladly do the same.
The location is unbeatable—just a short stroll from Lisbon’s charming old town. And during summer’s peak heat, Avenida da Liberdade remains refreshingly walkable under its shady canopy of trees.
Evenings were best spent at SEEN rooftop bar, sipping drinks while overlooking the city and admiring views of São Jorge Castle. Afterwards, the lobby bar offered a cozy retreat with live music and expertly mixed cocktails.
What elevates Tivoli above all is the unwavering excellence of its team—from housekeeping and doormen to restaurant staff, front desk agents, room service attendants, and even the seamstress. Every interaction was genuinely delightful.
This was my second visit to the hotel, and I can confidently say it has only improved in every way since last year. Tivoli Avenida da Liberdade is, without question, the finest place to stay in Lisbon—and for me, there’s simply no...
