We just returned from a lovely 5 night stay at Dom Sancho 1. The hotel is located in a 5 story characterful building on the second floor, on a wide tree lined avenue that is full of designer boutiques, approx 15 minute walk to where all the tourist restaurants and bars are and 5 minutes to the local metro station, it is in a very good location to explore all the tourist sites from. In the hotel there is a small modern lift, the stairs are tiring if you have luggage. We were greeted by a friendly and helpful lady on reception who checked us in and later when asked gave some excellent recommendations and advise. Our room was at the back, away from the street and breakfast room meaning minimal noise. The room was tastefully decorated with antique style pictures and furniture, with 2 single beds pushed together, a large wardrobe, desk/dressing table and TV, there was also bedside lights to read and a large window with shutters and free air con/heating. The bathroom was a little small but adequate for our stay. The whole room and bathroom was very clean with white towels and a small selection of toiletries. Our beds were made everyday by the maid. We decided to try the bed and breakfast option as it seemed good value and we were not disappointed, good selection, cheeses, ham, bread rolls, sliced bread, boiled eggs, cereals, yoghurt and fruit, also a good section of teas and coffee. We found all the staff friendly and helpful, we were also able to leave our luggage at the hotel on our last day as we had a late evening flight and allowed to use toilets to freshen up before we were picked up. If I had to write a small negative then I would say that the beds were a little hard for me ( but that is just a personal choice ) and maybe the door buzzer ( main door to whole building is closed around 10pm and you had to buzz to be let in) is a little loud and can be heard in the rooms at the back but that is just one tiny complaint. Overall I would recommend this hotel to everyone and would love to...
Read moreI stayed there for two weeks in Oct 2019(but Tripadvisor won’t allow me to input correct year). It was a work stay, so I had to commute. Here are my views.||UPS: It is walking distance to anywhere in the Cidade Velha. There are three metro stations very close. Marquês de Pombal walking 5 min up, Avenida some 100 metres down and Rossio further down below Praça dos Restauradores. Starbucks and food places available within waking distance. Landry and other amenities are all over, behind Avenida da Liberdade. Hotel is small, quiet and has a lovely touch of a crackling century old oak hardwood flooring. It almost feels like a time machine back to the 1900s!||DOWNS: Their breakfast is somewhat dry, bleak cliche boiled egg and jam on toast with cereals and coffee, and lacks sauces and real value protein one needs in the morning, especially before commuting through the not so pleasant subway or traffic to Parque das Nações. Probably because I am used to heavy breakfasts, but then that’s just me.||There was a coffee machine in the room with two capsules which you had to pay for. I guess they’re careful with hidden taxes and prefer to be honest with their customers, so I assume this isn’t exactly a “down”.||The view from my window wasn’t also the best, but I guess it was the type of room that was booked.||It would be a great idea adding meaty options(salty, ham steak and eggs type of breakfast) at an extra cost. I would gladly pay. I do not discourage you from staying there, be my guest, but I doubt I’ll go back there on holiday. Maybe for work again, but it’s an okay place...
Read moreTLDR; This hotel is great and inexpensive for the people that know they will only use the hotel as a safe place to sleep (8-10hrs) and cleanup after a long day of exploring. Pros(+4 stars); For the backpackers and/or people that understand that the hotel will be used as just a place to sleep (8-10hrs) and clean up, it's pretty good. The reception staff is great, the cleaning is great, and the location is great. Firm but comfortable beds (comfy bedding), hot showers, free WiFi, AC, TV, and very clean. The location of the hotel is definitely the best aspect for both walkers and commuters. The hotel is right across the street from the main bus stop and subway, so rides to Sintra or other areas in the city are incredibly accessible and run frequently (every 10 mins or so). The breakfast is good and should be treated as a cost cutting measure and/or an option for a quick bite to get you going in the AM before you hit the streets. Cons (-1 star); The WiFi was, most times, unreliable. The cell network is readily available for a backup in the area though. Our bathroom door didn't close all the way which presented some privacy issues. Overall; Great for people that will be out and about all day and want a safe and centrally located place to rest. If you are looking for more amenities and plan to stay inside a lot, this may not be the place for you. All-in-all, we really enjoyed our stay and would...
