This is a large public square with a double roundabout situated between Parque Eduardo VII and Ave. da Liberdade. There is an impressive national monument here but otherwise, I found it to be more of a functional location for motor traffic than a traditional leisure square like so many others you can find throughout Lisbon.
Basically this is a major road junction where several avenues converge, meaning a constant stream of road traffic circling the square. So expect noise pollution instead of quiet environs.
The important point of interest is the 36-metre tall column monument of the Marquis of Pombal, who oversaw the reconstruction of Lisbon after the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake. It is worth a few minutes to view if passing through this area of the city. Otherwise, not a peaceful square, just a place to view the monument and be...
Read moreMarques de Pombal is the architect of the city after the 1755 earthquake with engineering techniques against earthquake damage and this praça is either the heart or starting point of any celebration or protest you imagine. At the center of the circle stands the monument of Marques de Pombal, connected to it Parque Eduardo VII where you can relax, on the other side the praça is connected to Avenida Liberdade, an Avenue with 8 lanes, walking areas covered with trees, cafes, bars restaurants and high end designer shops. The circle is also an important transport hub for Lisbon with busstops, metro lines (yellow and blue lines with very short connections to the...
Read moreI found this public space too big and not at all people friendly. In fact, this plaza reminded me of communist style squares. Huge, empty, with an enormous statue. I almost thought the statue of Marques of Pombal would have old V.I Lenin gracing the pedestal. This is not a very people friendly place. Full of cars with no place to sit down, not a scrap of shade and plenty of opportunity to get hit by traffic while you're crossing at least three streets if you want to get to the other side of the square. The only reason that people visit this place is that it's...
