I only booked one night at Memory of Lisbon so I could stay in the city during a layover. Maybe it was just a series of unfortunate events but so much was off about the visit that I would hesitate to recommend it. ||||When I arrived, I did not ring the bell since the front door to the building was propped open -- this pension-style lodging is on the 3rd floor of an apartment building. Mistake #1. There is no elevator so I lugged my suitcase up 2 long flights of stairs (with no A/C in the hottest part of the summer). When I got to the check-in desk, there were 2 employees there so maybe one would have come downstairs to help if I had rung the bell, but it's hard to tell. The woman checking me in told me I had to download an app in order to get the codes to access 3 lock boxes that hold keys to the building, pension, and room. The app didn't work so I had to write them on paper. But I only needed the one for my room since the front door to the building was again propped open when I came in after 10 PM (!) and the door to the pension was open because an employee was checking in a new lodger.||||The place seemed to be full. I got a room with shared bath but didn't get to take a shower that night since there was a constant flow of women using the women's bathroom (just outside my door) from 10 PM until at least midnight, when I went to bed. I did manage to sneak in for 5 minutes to wash my face and brush my teeth. There is a second bathroom that can be used by either sex but it was on the opposite side of the pension from my room.||||When I lay down, I was overwhelmed by the smell of fabric freshener (I'm guessing that's what it was) on the pillow. I tried putting a towel over it but that didn't help. Since the smell was making me feel sick, I tossed the pillow on the floor and tried to sleep without it. I got a terrible night's sleep that night.||||The next morning, I had an awful headache from the bad night's sleep and felt nauseous from the smell in the room. The pension offers make-your-own breakfast but I couldn't eat since I felt so bad. Once I got outside in the fresh air and made my way to the airport, I felt much better.||||The few plusses - the rooms and common bathroom are kept clean. There is a snack room with fridge, micro, table, chairs, a variety of teas. But you have to wash the dishes you use. The water in the snack room sink never got very hot which could explain why the mug I used for my tea had, um, residue in it. The lodging is in a very good location, close to a lot of public transportation options that take you to touristy spots and the airport. One thing -- the description says it's close to Av. da Liberdade. I looked at that and not the map - Mistake #2 - and assumed the closest Metro stop was Avenida. It's not. Get off there and you have a 15-20 minute strenuous walk uphill through narrow cobblestone streets to get to the building (did I mention I was there during the hottest part of the summer?). If you get off at the Picoas stop (airport shuttle stops there too), it's a 9 minute walk on level ground.||||I don't mind staying at a place with minimal features for a budget price, but so many things were "off" during my stay at Memory of Lisbon that if I were to go to Lisbon again I would...
Read moreMemory of Lisbon looked good on the internet and promised so much. Sadly, difficulties abound here. Without a mobile phone, you need to remember or write down three different codes: 1 to enter the front door, 2 to enter the hotel floor and 3, to enter your room. And if you forget and mess up the combination, they fine you 30 euros. The room whilst nicely decorated, lacked air conditioning, fridge or TV. Our room, H, was with ensuite. The bathroom was very new, clean and well equipped. However, the shared showers were behind the kitchen and dining area, so whilst you are preparing food or eating, you are likely to be confronted with dripping and half dressed guests exiting the shower. Not nice. On departure I asked for a receipt, just to have confirmation of what they charged my credit card. This proved to be an insurmountable problem. Two phone calls were required by the receptionist to achieve this and eventually I was presented with a typed page with names and dates etc, but no stamp, or tax details. When I said that this was not a tax receipt, which by law they must provide I was given a smile and a blank stare. Something sadly...
