24-25/6/22 Friday night||We three British middle aged guys were touring Portugal by public transport for ten days.||We booked this hotel the day before in Braga as we were heading south and the Sao Poão festival has pushed prices up significantly in the centre so we were only able to get this hotel on the edge. We knew it was going to be uphill from Sao Bento station.||We arrived at the station at 3pm on the Friday and decided to walk in the heat with our cabin baggage/rucksacks to see some of the sights on the way and avoid public transport system of having to buy cards as we were only staying one night.||It was a steep walk for half an hour! Maybe a taxi would have been better? After overshooting the building and seeing some interesting street art we returned slightly downhill to find the ramp up to the hotel tower block (we had not checked out images beforehand). ||On entering the plain first lobby we checked in with the young polite and friendly man. He then asked us to go into the main lobby. Wow! Throwback to the 70s time! This place is a treasure! We checked in and were told the left hand lift goes up to the top floors where the hotel was. The rest were all residential. Our room was 1007 and up we went in the retro ‘fast’ lift to the Bond Lair!||On finding our room, in we went to find a magnificent large dual aspect room with huge windows overlooking the city below and the water towers above on the same sort of level. Three single beds (two joined as a double), clean linen, two armchairs, coffee table, desk with chair and bedside tables.||The room was immaculate and 70s! All original but the LED TV (such a pity!). We never tested the TV, the safe, antique hair dryer! The wooden shirt/jacket stand was impressive too. Two sides had distant see views, very impressive! The original A/C worked fine considering there were two huge windows letting in the sun. ||The built in plywood veneered cupboard had seven coathangers and spare blankets.||The only drawback I seem to remember is the lack of power sockets, being the 70s few were required. As I always bring extension leads and multi adapters (even within my 5kg backpack allowance) we survived charging our devices.||The minibar fridge was locked but fortunately we had our own supply of wine to toast to the view with! The bathroom was similarly retro, original and the window was the only openable one in the rooms. In the morning we had a proper bath for once!||Do not listen to those who complain about dated this and old that. This is run as a museum and respect is required!||The hotel was well worth the long walk uphill!! We had to leave to see friends but on our return we settled down and slept well, undisturbed to wake relatively early for the included breakfast in the top floor. The lift was the only way up (we found the stairs led to the kitchen) so we ventured up to find again a retro 70s triple aspect restaurant. Pity it did not spin!||We three managed to find a big corner table and took in the views again! The restaurant was quite busy and a bigger group came up to struggled to find a table big enough (we had started already at the best table so could not move). Admittedly the staff could not quite cope with the volume of guests and the spaces between the serving area and the tables meant there was a lot of dodging out of the way of other diners and staff refilling the trays with the basic of cold dishes. Nothing hot was on offer except DIY toast, coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Cereals, packaged jam and butter, sliced cheeses and ham (ham not for us pescatarians), croissants, rolls, fruit and orange juice were on offer. At one point the plates and cutlery and butter ran out so maybe they were still suffering from covid related lack of staff? Nevertheless we are and drank well. The view was the star! Get there early to get full provisions!||After breakfast we explored a bit, going up the fabulous spiral staircase to the roof. Lots more views and they could have a really good bar up here! This is a missed opportunity!||The glorious pink bathroom had a good shower in the bath with the sink taps having enough pressure to jet out a razor. Plenty of towels and toilet paper. A bidet was also available. There was plenty of light over the sink mirror for shaving. Bond needed a close shave!||We checked out at noon but had to take a peak at their impressive bar, lounge areas and the telephone booths first! We made our way down to the station happy that we had had an unexpected experience at a good price (€80 for the triple including breakfast) considering the season and the amount of tourists flooding into Portugal. At the station we bumped into some youngsters sporting rainbow flags who we joined later at the surprisingly big...
Read moreWe didn't spend much time in this hotel, so it was good enough. Its a bit further away from the downtown city we were in before this stay.. But with an uber it will cost you around 3 euro to get there. The staff is very old and very strickt in their rules. You can only get to the top floor with the stunning view when you have breakfast and probably diner, but we didn't went there at night. We were celebrating our birthdays and when we gave him our passport he didn't even noticed that. No happy birthday or anything like that. I wanted to do something special for my friend the next day because then it was her 50th birthday, but he didnt understand me. I wanted a special breakfast in our room or anything that they could offer. Instead of helping me at the desk he called me in the room.. Where my friend was. I didnt understand what the special breakfast he offert was, cause he could only say it was very good.. That day I found out it was a plate with a few sweets on it.. A bit disappointing.. Thankfully I ordered a cubcake from doce alto very good.. So I didn't need sweets..the room was old too. The crane was leaking and the iron plate at the door was sticking out. It ripped open my friends clothes. They didn't payed for it. They just said sorry.. So it was a good place to sleep and we loved our few. But they really need to update their hotel and staff.. I tried to contact them before I went to portugal to arrange things for my friends birthday but they never respond to it.. A bit disappointed to be honest. But we are very creative people so we created a party of our own!! As...
Read moreA relatively inexpensive and simple hotel that feels dated with fittings from yesteryear and a really old and outdated TV. It's a budget hotel that does kind of make you feel like you stepped into the past.
The single room I stayed in had most of what you need, although everything in a basic form. There was also a fully opening window for plenty of fresh air. However there seemed to be no extras like a safe, no usable fridge, no facial tissues, and no tea or coffee facilities etc. The shower also takes ages to get warm/hot so you may want to run it first before you get in. The room on the surface seems clean enough, though the tables were dusty and when I wiped them left a very noticeable residue on my cloth.
There's a reception sitting area downstairs including a bar that seems rarely used, and on the top floor there's a restaurant that serves a complimentary budget breakfast - think continental style. It's ample but don't expect a lot. The hotel's WiFi signal doesn't work in the restaurant either.
There's only one elevator which can mean there's a bit of a wait at times, but normally it's not too long.
For the weeknights I was there, I could hear music and people's voices from the nearby nightclub that was audible through the windows into the hours of the morning. It wasn't particularly loud but if you're a light sleeper this may be a problem if your room is facing...
