Hostel 2300 Thomar — Hotel in Tomar

Superb location: on the main road of the old town, close to the central square and few minutes from the Convent. The rooms are good; the only problem is that when keeping the window open to make air flow, a lot of noise comes from the street, since it is the main one of the old town (with a restaurant right next to the hostel and shops around). But by keeping the window closed, air does not circulate, and it becomes hard to breathe. As for the cleanliness, the hostel is pretty good generally. BUT, as I lay down to rest, I see that the mattress above me (there are bunk beds in dorms) has a very bad-looking plot l, looking like originated from blood or... Well, it is brownish, so...😅Another bed looked like having a dirty plot as well... But, again, for the rooms, kitchen, toilets, etc. the hostel is good.

There is one thing that I did not particularly like. As I was checking-in with a friend of mine, I -with all the good intentions- said that we still had to pay. For the next two minutes, the man looked astranged by what I said. "Of course, you booked by call, not by Booking, how could you pay?". I was telling him that I thought he forgot, as it looked like the check-in was over. But we were both mumbling and uttering words, and I felt like he was trying to make me feel dumb. I just wanted to pay, and told him "Yes, it was dumb" (even if I did it to not to cheat, but because I was seriously thinking he had forgotten). But he kept on mocking on me. I did not like it. At first, he thought it was a question, since he said "Why do you even ask?"; but he kept on going and going on like if I had done something horrible. Later, we chatted a bit about the Caminho and he showed us the hostel, but I really did not like those two minutes in which he was...

Good points : location. Girls on reception can be friendly. Bad points : no air-conditining, no fans. Extremely poor breakfast. no cheese no ham. Coffee poor. Breakfast room, not enough seating or too many broken chairs. The lounge area extremely poor design. uncomfortable seating - infact not sure you could call it seating. Wooden pallet boxes with some cushions?!?! What's that about? It's not acceptable and it's cheap lazy design.

What happened to normal comfortable armchairs or sofas that normal humans have in their lounge / sitting rooms? Rather odd instructional messages in big letters on the walls such as 'RELAX AND MAKE FRIENDS' (what's the point of this?) or in the breakfast room, 'ENJOY YOUR MEAL' which is rather antagonistic considering the breakfast is so poor. But what is the point of this? Again why not have pleasant pictures to decorate the walls? All the walls around the interior of the hostel are adorned with scribbles and graffiti !(Why?!) with all kinds of pretentious messages or 'words of wisdom' from teenage travellers. It just looks a mess and does not in anyway create a calming or aesthetically pleasant atmosphere. Would it not have been better to have had some nice pictures / paintings? Terrace Area: inhabited by lots of dirty noisy pigeons. Public health hazard surely? The location is excellent. Right in the town center and very close to cafes, restaurants, a farmacia, and markets. The rooms are clean, comfortable, pretty spacious,and well ventilated with windows that open. Common areas are clean. There's a terrace with clothesline. Weirdly the men's and women's toilet rooms have their mirror at a common sink. Showers for men and women are plentiful and separate, but not much room for toiletries and changing. Kitchen area has kettle, toaster, fridge, and stove. Breakfast is cereal, bread, spreads, cookies, coffee,tea, and juice. All available at 4 AM which is a great help for warm weather pilgrims who need to leave early to avoid the heat. Staff is outstanding. Super helpful and patient. The building seems very secure but staff may not be on-site the entire night. I liked it enough to stay two nights. Excellent for...
