We stayed in a superior double with a balcony on the third floor, and gasped aloud when we saw the view. Jaw dropping! The room was spacious, spotlessly clean, well equipped with a free safe, mini fridge, plenty of storage and brewing facilities which makes a pleasant change as many European hotels don't offer. The bed was super comfortable and we slept well and could hear no noise through the walls or on the corridor outside our room. The bathroom is large with a lovely shower, fluffy towels and free toiletries. Complimentary water in the fridge. The lift is very, very slow as others have commented, but we found this amusing rather than annoying. The staff are so friendly and it's obvious they want you to enjoy your stay. The breakfast was fab, served in a beautiful room with exposed stone walls and quirky art, we loved it. We found plenty to start our day, and the staff were very proactive at restocking. We were able to check in slightly earlier than 2.00pm and were able to store our luggage on the last day so we could maximise our time in San Marino. This is an excellent place with a central location and brilliant value for money. Yes, it's an uphill walk from the bus but so are most places! If you visit SM you need to be fairly fit to negotiate its peaks and troughs! Highly recommended La Grotta and wouldn't...
Read moreWhat a wonderful find this hotel was. Firstly when we arrived much later than expected due to strikes on the trains and busses in Italy they waited up for us (we had told them we were delayed). Breakfast was quite a treat - everything provided tasted wonderful and it was very difficult to avoid overindulging. The hotel is located right in the middle of the Centro Storico so nothing in the old town is more than about 10 minutes away on foot, even if some places require a climb up or down several sets of stairs to reach. There were countless restaurants and cafes within a minute or two - the only problem was deciding which one to eat in. The hotel provides guests with a San Marino tourist card which gave us discounts at all the museums and the towers. The general atmosphere in the hotel is extraordinarily welcoming with free coffee by reception available 24 hours a day, and the reception staff were kind and tried to help to make our stay in San Marino as pleasant as possible. If we ever come to San Marino again I would...
Read moreWe booked a Superior Double Room but unfortunately the air conditioning wasn’t functioning properly, with the room temperature at check-in being 29 degrees Celsius. In response to this, I found the attitude of the man on reception to be poor and dismissive and inappropriate for a hospitality business with customers paying a not inconsiderable amount for a room where one of the advertised features was not working. He seemed more interested in watching the football match on TV in the rest area behind reception. We were told the next day by a different receptionist that the issue had been fixed when in fact there had been no fix.||In addition, after check-in we saw that the passport photocopies of guests (including my own) were left in a pile on the (unmanned) front reception desk, and this was still the case later in the evening when we returned to the hotel after dinner. This is very lax in terms of data protection.||I give the hotel two stars for the great view of the surrounding countryside that our room had, and the hotel’s...
