Garden Court uMhlanga — Hotel in KwaZulu-Natal

So impressed! We booked for the Comrades Marathon package and were absolutely delighted with the experience. The UGC staff deserve all the praise for being so warm, welcoming and eager to assist - from reception and the restaurant team to the porters and housekeeping. This really made our trip ALL the more special. ||The daily breakfast buffet was top notch. The team were constantly refilling and restocking, so everything was fresh and inviting (no soggy fruit salad or sad, almost-empty platters). Great selection of continental and hot breakfast options. ||Our room was on the 5th floor, overlooking the pool courtyard. We stayed for 5 nights and it was perfect with sufficient cupboard space and a nice-sized bathroom. Clean, comfortable, air conditioned and with blackout curtains. The location of the hotel is ideal, just a few steps away from Gateway Mall and about a 5 minute drive to the beautiful Umhlanga promenade and restaurant district. It's really well situated for travelling to Durban and Ballito, and 15 minutes to the airport. ||And thank you to Southern Sun for the extra touches around the marathon itself. The update in our room prior to race day, the fantastic early breakfast service (from 2am!) with - quite literally - anything and everything hungry runners could want. The variety of "grab & go" items for the race, including carry bags, made seconding our runners so easy. And the "did you forget anything?" station with safety pins, tissues, bottled water, salt sachets... the team had thought of everything, and it was so...

It was very disappointing n bad start to the weekend of my husband's birthday. The room allocated to us had face masks n litter from the previous guests key card holder etc on the counter the shower gel was used n the soap that was open had hair on it. Clearly the room was not cleaned which means it wasn't even sanitized or fogged, this means an infection waiting to happen. This is absolutely unacceptable during this time. After making mention of this we were given another room which was smaller God knows if it was sanitized, n not forgetting the next room door was less than a meter away from which was occupied by other guests under the current conditions guests should have been spread out as the hotel wasn't as busy. Next morning we went for breakfast the waiter took away the dirty cutlery n crockery but not our hot meal order, I mentioned to her the table was uneven n I placed a folded serviette under, she said she would get maintainence to sort it out, she never came back to the table until I went looking for her to hand her our selection for the hot meals. She then asked me where I was sitting which she already had forgotten, although another guest was seated 15mins after us got his hot meal order taken within 5mins. We decided to support the local hospitality industry n expected better, all of this could have been prevented, it's the little things that sets a facility apart...
