Reading 5 or so good reviews and a few not so good, combined with various people recommending CaneCutters Umhlanga to me; was inevitable that I try for myself. Service: I read reviews that said a certain lady was unfriendly and bad people skills or slow food arrival. I had a very pleasant experience with the young gentleman that assisted me, he was patient and friendly. The food was ready in less than 10min. Food: I'm personally not a fan of bunny chow due to the bread, but I opted to order the Delux Mutton Bunnie-with the *bread on the side*; reason being, the gentleman explained to me that if you order from the 'curries' menu the portion of curry itself is slightly smaller than what they would use if you order from the 'bunnies' menu. Furthermore, the difference in meat is as follows 'mutton bone in' all meat is on bone, 'mutton' half the meat portion is no bone the other half is on bone and the 'delux mutton' is all meat and no bone. I thus suggest (if you not very hungry), after me buying two portions, that two people could probably get away with just ordering one portion; perhaps with a roti or two, each as well. If the choice is between getting 2 x mutton bone in or 1 x delux mutton, that is. TASTE: I would agree that the curry is very flavourful and a very good portion of meat, in the delux version I had. Curry sauce is nice and thick, there's quite a layer of oil but I just poured that out. The one large potato was good, slightly soft- I prefer a firmer potato but seems others like the soft potato. One shouldn't expect the taste of lamb, as the mutton naturally has a slightly more "wild"/aged flavour. The curry is not unbearably hot with no flavour, as is some other places, which is good. Might be a bit hot for a first-time curry eater. Other recommendations: The broad bean and trotters & bean bunnies, trotter one is said to be very hot, seem to be popular orders. Soji delux: My soji dessert was nothing to write home about, I've had much better. I would say not enough butter/condensed milk used. So I wouldn't recommend that.

I overdid it. Traveling from Cape Town to Durban, you're keen to sample the #1 local delicacy, the infamous "Bunny Chow". I asked the locals for their favourite recommendations and although with a variety of preferences, Cane Cutters came up a few times. Wowsers. Were they right. The inexpensive menu posed a great decision-making feat. I went for the popular Mutton Bunny with a side of Sugar Beans Bunny. I took the "mini" versions of both and boy oh boy was that deceptive 😂. The portion sizes are HUGE! As a knife and fork guy, I dug in using my God given cutlery...my hands (they don't give you a fork and knife for a reason). EVERY SINGLE MORSEL leaves you impersonating "that emoji" 🤯. The journey through flavour is insane. Every ingredient, even the picked carrot & onion side, is fresh, flavourful and delectably transcendent. The service is world class, fast and of premiere restaurant standards. If you're in Durban and wish to try "gourmet" street food...visit Cane Cutters. You will not be disappointed.

It was my first time being there even though I am a durbanite, I was away for a long period away from home, and wanted a home cooked meal away so from the airport we decided to try cane cutters, although we were late on a Monday night like 19:30 and wifey could not have their famous chicken Tikka, they still made her Tikka wrap and I had THE WIFE ISNT HUNGRY, WOW that's all I can say, the Mutton bunny was filled till the top and second bowl of curry, salad and Soji with a portion of chips and 500ml cool drink, see picture above and it was incredible, the staff was so accommodating although it was late and even told us don't rush even though we were past their closing time, different spices makes their food unique and really tasty, it's a full 5 star rating from me , keep up the amazing service and excellent food you'll prepare, thumbs up.

Visit Date: 12 April 2024

Terrible experience, least I had. (I visited twice, so I must write a review they deserve)

Table service is certainly not admirable. These people have no idea how to serve an Ala carte to the table. (This place is only as good as to grab n go small quick meals) - good for eating typical bunny-chow type meals only.

Service staff has no coordination between them.

They bring the curry we ordered, but no spoons to dish out...

Coke bottle delivered, but no glasses. Ordered 2 butter and garlic naans before the main order was given to the table; to save time - yes, of course you guessed it it right, naans were on our table after main meal was served. Also, both the naans were not served together - one after another.

The food portion is OK. Mutton curry we ate was not so nice. A small portion of daal was better. Butter chicken we had was nice. ( to me, it was not value for money)

Our order was served on the table in portions, and after a delay (can't use the word Wait) of 40 minutes.

Something that was more torturous to us was to see other customers who came after us were served before us, and we were only looking at them in desperation.

This Umhlanga branch is a mere made-up-look-nice-picture of street food vendors but in a shop.

When Cancutters first opened in Glenwood, we ate there too, and it was a...

This was one of the worst service ever received. My family and i chose this place to break fast at, what a mistake. We tried their mutton bunnies, omg it was filled with unnecessary spices, so much of pepper, it was edible but the spice was terrible. It took forever to come out, customers who came after us were served before us. We also ordered curry and rice, which we were not even given cutlery for. When asked even for a plate, the waitress gave us a look like she was so irritated and walked away without even speaking to us. Later comes back with a side plate. When i requested a plate, she sighs then another male brings the plate. After all this, then they bring the chips i ordered for my 1 year old to nibble on. No seasoning, no sauce, nothing. Asked for a wetwipe, they dont apparently keep it. I asked for a finger bowl, they were not able to assist even with this. For the 1st time in my life i walked out without finishing our meals, and without tipping the arrogant service we received. There was an elderly indian man who came to clear the tables and i told him how unhappy we were which he said he will call the manager but i refused. He did apologize though, although i felt he did not have to. Definitely will NEVER GO HERE AGAIN, and will not...
