This is by far the worst "5 star" hotel I have ever stayed at. The staff are inept and liars. Wwhen we complained that the "air conditioner" in the room wasn't working we were told some crockpot story about Spanish Law forbidding low temperatures in rooms (it was 26 degrees, and I know this is a fact because three seperate mecanics came to visit over the course of 2 days claiming they would do their best to lower the temperature. I had a room change but quickly found out I was not the only one having the same issue as I kept on hearing people lining up at reception to complain about the same thing. One of the mecanics eventually admited that the adminstration had decided to decrease the power to the air conditioning unit to save money as they are even more expensive to run during the heat waves that was ourring at the time of my stay.
It's also important to note that there is a large construction site literally neighbouring the hotel , and at midnight when I went to complaint about the noise they were making which had woken me up, I was told that there was nothing they could about it because they had a 24 hour construction license.
The lighting in the bathroom is apparently awful to put make up on with (it didnt affect me, but we swapped a lot of complaint stories with other guests whilst waiting in line at reception to complain).
The shower door isn't hermetic and so water leaks out onto the shower matt, saturates it and continues to spill out into the rest of the bathroom, which is annoying if you wake up in the need to go to the loo as you end up with wet feet.
The food in the hotel bar is by far the worst we had throughout the weeklong trip to spain, and also some of the most expensive. The cocktails are also terrible and very overpriced. Breakfast however is ok.
We were a party of 5 rooms, and we all had terrible experiences in each of them, hairs in bed sheets, lipstick stained towels, nail clippings on bathroom floor, they charge to use the pool and force you to but a swimming cap etc. But really nothing surpased the crass arguments and stupid excuses by the front desk staff, particularly the head of the night shift back in September (which is when I stayed.)
At least they did not argue in giving me my money back so that I could go stay somewhere else, first time I've ever had to do that but was very willing to do it despite having another 2 days left of the conference I was attending in the same hotel.
If you're going to a conference communte from somewhere else and use an uber/cabify...
Read moreModern hotel with spectacular views, quiet and soundproofed rooms, comfy beds that are good for a night's sleep. But there were some issues: We booked two rooms side by side for 3 nights. One was ready by check-in time at 3pm, the other wasn't until over an hour after we arrived at 3pm. And we had to go back down to reception to ask about the second room even though the staffer said they would personally come up shortly (I'd expected that to mean 15 mins or so) with the key cards. When we went to reception, that staffer wasn't there and we had to explain again to another staff member what the issue was. Our first room smelled bad, of ammonia/methane gas when we walked in. We had to open the windows and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Two of the pillows also smelled slightly of cigarette smoke (there were two cigarette butts thrown on the ledge outside our window). When our second room was finally ready, it smelled fresh and clean, and not used at all. The drains also didn't reek like the first one. One room had 2 bottles of still water and 2 sparkling. The other room had only 2 still. Not really the problem. The next day after the room was made up, there were no bottles in either room. All 5-stars we've stayed in always replenish the bottled water. Cos it's never a good idea to drink from the tap. We rang for the water but it didn't arrive after half an hour. We had to ring again and they only brought 4 bottles for the 2 rooms. And again the next day, we had to ring for a fresh set. Our key cards kept malfunctioning. Like out of the 2, one would stop working after we left the room. We kept them away from mobile phones as we were told that could affect them. However, the staff did admit that the ones we had were being replaced because they kept malfunctioning. We had to keep going back to reception several times a day to get them reset. The room shower water would leak out under the door even when it was closed tight. Not great since the floor tiles were very slippery for a bathroom (not sure why they didn't choose non-skid ones like other places). The staff in general were ok but could be more responsive and organised and follow up with the promised tasks quickly instead of having the guests chase them. It's expected of a 5-star rating. Likewise with the cleanliness of the room. Don't think guests can't smell small things. These are all minor issues but they add up, and make the stay less than...
Read moreYou are first greeted with their unusual entrance alley. It looks like a walkway but it isn’t, so drivers especially uber and the like might stop at the main street an almost 100m walk that can be problematic with the strong winds or rain.
Lobby and reception is average. I made a reservation for a room on the higher floors, and I got one at the 23rd floor. From this tower the most interesting views should be to the south where the centre of Madrid is located. But it is too far to see anything and a large chunk of the view is blocked by another high rise building just next to it.
Room amenities were good. I was surprised that they included a steam iron along with a regular iron at the same time. The bathroom had a decently sized shower along with a bath that overlooks the room with a glass wall. The view can be obscured with a set of movable wooden boards that act like a blind. The room itself has wooden floors throughout and a decent quality bed. The design might feel a bit outdated but I really liked it.
Breakfast is one of the main highlights of the hotel although it still has room for improvement. The choice is rather limited but you wouldn’t feel that you missed that much and you get mostly well curated choice here. Breakfast is served on the 30th floor with the windows looking east. So you get a good dose of sunshine to start your day. The glass cladded exterior isn’t very clean so you wouldn’t get a clear view of the outside but you don’t need such a view as it mainly overlooks a large and ugly train station.
For transportation to the city you have to use Taxi/ Uber or a bus. You can also walk or take the bus for the start of the trip and change at Plaza de Castilla where you have the metro service along with many other bus services. There isn’t much to see around the...
