So at the beginning of this review, I really cant stress enough that nothing in the hotel was clean. And i dont mean “it was old, so it wasnt clean”, i mean it was legitimately not clean (surfaces had dust on it, mold on the walls, stains in bed, etc).
As soon as we opened the door to our room, our nose was filled with the fragrant aroma of cigarette smoke (in a non smoking room) and mold. Upon turning on the lights, we were welcomed with the stained and crack filled walls and protruding wires of our room (see photos).
The bed smelled downright bad, and I doubt that the sheets get washed after every guest (or even weekly for that matter) and we ended up sleeping fully clothed as a result. The pillows also had a pretty bad smell to them.
Believe it or not, the soap in the bathroom didnt even smell clean (which I didnt know was possible). Shower curtain was too short, and water sprays all over the floor when you shower. Toilet was average, so it has that going for it. Also there was blood on the walls in the bathroom (see photos).
Things that were cool: in our room we had a full water cooler and refrigerator system. Having never seen one of these before I was slightly amused, although it belonged more in an office setting than in a room.
The breakfast was really laughable (since it was one of the only features people recommended). It consisted of stale toast (no joke), rice, salad and tea eggs that were definitely multiple weeks old. Ended up going to 711 afterwards to get food as well.
We tried to cancel our room and wouldnt let us for the second night. Guess they knew their hotel was this bad and had to take the money where they could. Ended up going back to Taipei and leaving the room empty the second night.
In conclusion, the best parts of this hotel were below average and everything else was downright bad. Dont waste your money, there are cheaper places that are much nicer in Taichung - if you cant find somewhere cheaper stay in the train station or on the sidewalk, it will provide you with a better experience and will surely be cleaner.
UPDATE: After going to a doctor for a mysterious rash after staing in the hotel, it appears that I had Recieved bedbug bites from the night spent there. Hotel is a serious health risk and I'm not sure how it hasn't been shut down.
UPDATE AFTER REPLY Correct, they offered us a different room (not an upgrade), however, I am not sure any guest would want to stay in any room in a hotel where the cleanliness standards were so low that this would be allowed to happen in the first place.
Before you plan your next trip to the Kiwi hotel, just remember that in the case you have a bed-bug infested room with blood stains both on the walls and mattresses that it is not possible to cancel your following nights, but you can get put into another disgusting room free of charge! So many things to look forward to!
It all comes down to the management (or mismanagement) of the hotel, how little respect and care they have for their guests and what they believe is acceptable for their rooms. Not being able to understand why someone wouldn't want to stay in the room afterwards only further...

Read moreThe location is really convenient as the train station is within reasonable distance, and there are a lot of buses nearby. The room itself was exactly what we have expected and even we have booked a twin room for three people, the space was more than enough and it was not necessary to add an extra bed. And the staff there were helpful and were eager to show their hospitality by showing us directions to different places in Taichung. And there were a lot to choose from for breakfast and it is quite good.||||However, we are kind of disappointed at the room toilet as it can't flush properly and toilet paper can't be thrown into the toilet which doesn't really make sense. We stayed there for two nights. But even though we have reported the toilet problem to the staff after the first night, they didn't fix it immediately and the problem still exist when we checked out the hotel. ||||Overall the hotel is quite good and it is worth visiting again as long as the toilet...
