I found this place when I was waiting for a bus right outside. It was too early so they were not open. I came back later for lunch. The place is your typical small restaurant in Taiwan. You ordered the food outside where you also could get to go they give you a buzzer and you go inside to sit. There is no seat assignment, so you just sit wherever you like. The decor is fashion, charming, and hip. The background music is covered of modern pop songs, which is appropriate for this restaurant. A few minutes later, my food was ready I went to the counter to pick up my food. It is all stoneware. There is no plastic or paper which makes a classy. I ordered a chicken salad and a pork and for dessert. I had the coconut ice cream on deep fried toast . The shredded chicken salad yummy the dressing was sweet and sour and spicy complemented the red onion, cucumbe slivers, parsley, and chicken very well. It had more kick than I expected, but in a good way. The pork chop is a minced pork dish topped with fried egg. The pork was season well. I chose medium spice And that level is actually less spicy than the salad. The minced pork paired well with the rice, and the fried egg compliment perfectly The coconut ice cream is handmade. The ball of coconut ice cream was topped with mint and sat on a stack of deep fried toast that was drizzled with a panda’s sauce. The ice cream was creamy and did not tasted artificial. The fried toast with the pandan sauce added to mention to the dessert it gave the creamy ice cream a crunch and the soft toast under which allows the coconut ice cream to bind to. It was a good way to finish this meal. Mr. Gapao is a hip eater in Taiwan that is refreshing change from the bare minimum decor of other small restaurants in Taiwan. The food is yum. The service is friendly and the decore is comfortable and friendly. it is a perfect spot to take a break from the busy streets outside or for a fun and...
Read moreThis restaurant serves a truly authentic Thai basil pork dish—the real deal! They offer both the classic minced pork version and a special variation with crispy pork belly, which is not commonly found here. The crispy pork belly makes all the difference, and the spice level is exactly like what you’d get in Thailand. You can actually order it Thai-style spicy! The fried egg is spot-on, with crispy edges and a perfectly runny yolk. The rice is authentic Thai long-grain rice, just as it should be.
The presentation, restaurant decor, and atmosphere are all genuinely Thai. Even the staff uniforms are adorable—they wear outfits that resemble Thai motorcycle taxi vests! Eating here really made me feel nostalgic for home.
The spice level is truly Thai, not Taiwanese—so be careful when choosing your spice level if you’re not used to very spicy food!
I haven’t tried their Thai tea yet, but the cup looks huge. Definitely planning to give it a...
Read moreA delicious and inexpensive Thai eatery in central Taichung. It's clean, simple, and more Thai than most taiwanese Thai restaurants. The crisp pork salad was served with plenty of fresh herbs and and the dipping sauce was fantastic. The stir-fried pork with basil was a little on the street side but still great. The pork broth was stewed with lemongrass and other herbs. Yum!
We enjoyed this place and will...
