ย ย ย Read moreWe are just finishing a fantastic 5 night stay at the Park Hyatt Zanzibar. We are big fans of the Hyatt brand, especially Park Hyatt and Alila, and this hotel did not disappoint, in fact our expectations, although high, were met or exceeded in most every way.
We arrived at 7 pm and were quickly checked in. We were offered Suite 3211 as Hyatt Globalist using a suite upgrade certificate. We were then given a quick tour of the hotel property, by Concierge Fauzi, which is in two buildings. One is the historic residence of one of the Omani sultans. The other is the main hotel and dining/bar area opened in 2015. Fauzi then accompanied us to our suite and provided some of his restaurant and activity recommendations for our stay.
Our first impressions of the suite were very good. We have stayed in a number of Park Hyatt's and this property compared well with others around the world. The suite was large and consisted of wo rooms and two balconies with gorgeous views of the Indian Ocean and the beach below. We spent a lot of time watching the boats and people moving into and out of the harbor and along the beach.
There is noise from the beach at certain times, especially in the evening, as the local community enjoys the beach and ocean. It was not a problem for us we always travel with a sound machine that blocks out most noise. I mention it just in case you are a light sleeper.
The breakfast was really one of the best ever. Dominica, Happiness, Adventina and a whole host of other capable servers, hostesses, and food preparers met our every need. I have attached 4 pictures showing a portion of the buffet offers. I really enjoyed the sparkling wine (not the cheap stuff), the fresh cut coconuts, fresh juices, and local favorites.
We also ate twice at the restaurant for dinner and, again, the food was really good and the service over the top. Especially liked the lamb biryani served in a clay bowl with a bread coating. See photo. The drink and meal prices are higher than most places nearby, but the ambiance and service are worth it.
We also enjoyed the pool area on the days that were sunny. The gym was also nice. Some of the treadmills needed service and I mentioned that to the first desk staff and they said they would have someone look into that maintenance.
Fauzi, Abdul, and many other concierge staff were helpful throughout our stay in booking dinner reservation and activities. We took the Stone Town walking tour, which was really good. We also took the day trip to an island on a private dhow (local wooden boat). We were hoping for more exclusivity for the boat tour since we paid quite a premium to have a private boat, but the places we could go were, for the most part, crowded with boats filled with people. I would skip that tour next time. It is not the Park Hyatt's fault, and I don't blame the concierge staff in any way, but it just wasn't for us.
Overall great stay and we hope to return again sometime soon since I work on a project in Tanzania on the mainland and it is easy to get...
ย ย ย Read moreOur stay fell short of the Park Hyatt expectations. The building and shared spaces are stunningly beautiful but our room felt like a dungeon.
Pros: The Veranda, Living Room, and Dining Room have the most amazing views of the water and were perfect spots for lounging and dining. We were also very pleasantly surprised with how good the food was, albeit expensive for Zanzibar standards. Everything we tried from the breakfast buffet, to lunch, to the Living Room snacks were delicious, good quality, and well portioned. The servers were very nice and attentive.
Cons: I really wanted to like this place but kept getting disappointed with the service and the condition of the hotel.
Our room was at the farthest end of building three and had a city view. We were told there were no other rooms available for status upgrades. The room only had a small section of windows facing a shaded area so natural light was almost non-existent. Two of the puck lights at the entrance were non-functional, we could barely see the inside of the cabinets and security safe. Since we were the farthest room, WiFi in the room was horrible. There were water leak stains everywhere: on the floor near the room entrance, under our sink, in the ceiling of spa treatment room (some areas were black), on the carpet in the hallways. Some of the linens and towels in our room and in the spa had a musty smell, like they werenโt properly washed and dried. The walls and windows were also surprising thin, we could clearly hear the cleaning being done and the television from the next room.
As for the service and hospitality, half of our interactions were pleasant enough but the other half were disappointing. First, it was so difficult to get a hold of anyone through the phone. We often had to call multiple times to get an answer and when they did answer, they sounded annoyed or flustered. One of the spa masseuses had no ounce of warmth in the way she talked to me. She wanted my hair tied for the massage and gave me a flimsy rubber (yes rubber) band. There also wasnโt the typical calming spa music, just the sound of honking and scooters from the open window. We pre-arranged for breakfast to be brought to our room since we were checking out early and it was delivered 15 minutes late, we only had a few minutes to eat.
There was nothing from our stay that felt personal, despite Park Hyattโs tagline being โLuxury is personal.โ I would hesitate coming back here in the future or...
