Our two-day stay was precipitated by an unforeseen medical need to advance our trip to Chiang Mai ahead of schedule and find a hotel with available, groundfloor level rooms. We were unable to check in at the Rendezvous Guesthouse because of too-short notice, but the owner kindly helped us to identify a nearby alternative, and we booked it without any advance information. Good location, and the rock-bottom basics were in place (though the two small towels were surely the skimpiest examples we've experienced since youth hostel days of yore, and we had to request (!) a roll of toilet paper).||I do hope my review is not overly colored by my lack of enthusiasm for having had to spend two days immobilized on a bed in a painfully featureless room with a broken leg while waiting for our rebooked flights back to the USA. Certainly, with some measure of planning, I could have selected a place with better amenities and, perhaps, a garden setting that could sooth the frazzled soul. But having to beg for additional toilet paper on the last day, and the refusal by two staffmembers (family/owners) to call for a taxi to transport us on our morning of checkout, did surprise us. They were clearly too absorbed in playing online solitaire. It was suggested that we plant ourselves on the street to hope eventually to flag down a tuk-tuk or sangteow that could accommodate all our luggage and a leg in a straight cast. Shop owners across the street were kind enough to do this for us and to explain to the driver our destination. But after we turned in our key and waited on the exterior bench with a view of the street, the owner dashed back to our room, clearly making sure we hadn't stolen the coveted towels or the extra pillows. Distasteful, bad form, and especially inexplicable as we are a middle-aged couple who practice great courtesy as a general rule and keep interactions positive when traveling overseas. The kindness of others kept our good impressions of Thailand intact, but with just a little effort, these lethargic hoteliers could have earned a measure of thanks instead of a...
Read moreI checked in just before the Sunday Night Walking Market began. The gentleman at the desk went to a great deal of trouble to take out a map and show me where I'd be going the next day, mapping out my entire itinerary for me- and this without my asking for it- saving me lots and and lots of time and trouble with my driver. I SO appreciated this from him. Saved me trying to sort out where things were. What a kind gesture. This hotel is STEPS away from the market street, very close to downtown, it has very nice rooms, a fridge, and there is (at least for me ) a GEM of an antique store about 30 steps across the street. There I found exactly what I was looking for. Really old and authentic items, reasonably priced, hilltribe textiles, old Buddhas, nice paintings. The lovely woman and I sat last night and spoke on her floor for an hour after I exhausted the Walking Market. Which, by the way, gets very very same same after a while. This small shop is where I am going to drop most of my money for her authentic items. ||||Chances are your taxi from the airport will offer your guide services so take that offer seriously. As of 2015, a day's guide is going to run you from around 1800 to 2000 baht. ||||Safe Court House is perfectly located close to but not right on the main drag, is very very quiet, sleep quality on the third floor where I was: cemetery quiet. A/C takes just a few minutes to cool off (give it time, it works just fine), there's a big wardrobe and hangers for your stuff and a big clean bathroom. You cannot go wrong here. Very very happy. Cannot say enough about...

Breakfasts in the restaurant again were great. What lets the place down is the staff. Nearly all seemed completely disinterested in helping you. On checking in they seemed distinctly unfriendly. They would not help you with your luggage up to your room, they did not have an iron or ironing board, and if you wanted a taxi they suggested you walked down the road and hailed one..you suspected that ringing for one was too much effort, and interrupted their internet browsing. This is a real shame as for the price category this has 5...
