Arrival was a bit strange. Had to get my own bags out of the taxi then eventually somebody arrived to help. Took of without saying hello but with my bag so I followed. Inside seated and passport and credit card removed. Signed in and given key offered assistant but I was OK alone. Room is very nice, simplicity, very clean (spotless) and extremely well maintained. The bathroom does not disappoint rain and wand shower was amazing, elegant bath next to the window, very spacious. The room is elegant minimalistic simplicity. White walls, simple seating and mood lighting.
Pool-nice large and (reasonably 1.4m) deep pool, a blue tinge with minimalistic setting of white walls, greenery and trees. Surrounded on two sides with extra large loungers. The pool attendent was quick to introduce himself and offer luxury towels, drinking water and sun-lotion. The bar was closed for renovation when I stayed but I was able to order a cocktail in the lobby. I have to say I was disappointed, I ordered a Blood Mary and specifically asked for (1 tsp Worcester sauce), this was not a good cocktail, the tomato juice was thin and watery, I couldn't really taste any vodka, I was not offered salt or pepper and the celery was dirty at each end.
Overall thought I would highly recommend this hotel if you like a minimalist decor. I certainly do and I will stay again. Update 05/11/2023 Second stay, a very warm welcome from the concierge who immediately recognised me. Check in was as before very smooth, welcome drink, seated at the lobby the paperwork is brought to you. Smooth and swift and like the decor minimalistic as is the hotel information provided, of course you only need to ask. I asked about breakfast, "06:00-10:30 in Nam restaurant". I had booked the same room type as before and was allocated a room on 7th floor this time (Metropolitan Room King) I forgot to mention previously that the air conditioning is excellent and much quieter than other hotels. I truly find being in this room relaxing, there is something calming about the clean simplistic lines, the smooth dark black wood floor that is warm to the feet, the white walls and uncluttered surfaces. The off edge hinged door to the bathroom leads seamlessly to warm (I want to say sandstone tiles but not sure) non slip sand coloured bathroom, with it's timeless layout. You can tell that the fittings were of a time but they retain such a quality feel and on the whole maintenance is impeccable. I say on the whole because there was a damaged sharp raised area below the door knob unfortunately this is out of sight but very much in easy reach when opening the door, this did lead to a sharp and nasty surprise, and a cut to the index finger that required dressing. I reported this to the concierge, he immediately sent maintenance to the room and offered first aid assistant (I had already dressed the wound so declined). When I returned to my room after swimming the sharp metal had been removed either sanded back and painted or replaced.
The pool area was just as welcoming and calming as on my last trip. Lemon infused water and soft towels immediately provided, I had a glass of wine and a fruit smoothie both excellent.
I made it to breakfast this trip. But I rather wish I had not. I chose the smoked salmon and avocado on pumpernickel. salmon-OK,avocado-perfect pumpernickel very dry, crust piece Overall this dish was lacking any seasoning or flavor. There was worse though the buffet was also as minimalistic as the rest of the hotel, however in this context not in a good way. The salad station was almost empty the cold cuts and cheese the same. The bread area had a small but good selection unfortunately the French stick was so stale, dry and hard I literally couldn't bite it. My advice if booking to stay here which I highly recommend choose an option without breakfast. Don't let any of the negatives above put you off though, this hotel truly offers a unique level of service it is quite different to other 5 star hotels. The room that I stayed in is so calming I will...
Read moreA perfect oasis after intense days in sticky, smoggy Bangkok. Como's Shambhala Spa brand is omnipresent, bringing wellbeing (or at least aromatherapy) into virtually all aspects of the facilities. This must be one of the best smelling hotels in the world.
The concierge, Mr. Ismail, is a perfect example of what a difference a talented concierge can make. His knowledge, resources and access made an extraordinarily positive contribution to our first time in Bangkok. He just seems to have someone on speed dial for everything you could think of, from issues with booked-out trains to last-minute ringside muay thai tickets.
The hotel's just too big and busy to manage consistently personal service, but all team members from reception to breakfast to pool were perfectly welcoming, pro-active and reliable. At breakfast, the waiter remembered our preferred coffees from the previous day.
The gym is by far the best hotel gym I've ever seen. It simply has the best available version of every piece of equipment you can think of. It can be used outside of the official opening hours on request to reception.
The pool is also large by hotel standards - 25 metres long and wide enough to never feel crowded. There were always enough loungers for everyone, and the attendant did a great job of clearing vacant spots and providing chilled water. Overhanging mature trees and surrounding buildings meant that there was always a shady area.
Breakfast is served as a mixture of buffet and dishes cooked to order. The selection changes daily, and includes lots of Shambhala-branded healthier options. This was the only hotel (or café for that matter) in Thailand which had any kind of lactose-free milk during a 2 week trip.
The main restaurant, Nahm, has a very good reputation (and a Michelin star), but we only had breakfast there. There are lots of excellent everyday eateries within 10 minutes on foot, such as Naga Café, Baan Dusit...
Read moreWe stayed at 3 hotels in Thailand and this one was just ok. We booked for the hotel to pick us up from the airport and the email said to wait at 2. We waited 10 minutes but no one was at that door to pick us up. We then called the hotel and someone from the airport came and found us and took us to another door, 5, where the car was. When we arrived at the hotel the manager said there are never pick ups at door 2, implying we were in the wrong but you will see from the email image that we followed the instructions given.
This hotel is only good if you want to be close to the airport, but not good if you want to explore the city. The intersection where the hotel is located connects the airport highway to the city so there is so much traffic that you will have a hard time getting a taxi, you will need to take the metro instead. My experience: When we arrived we asked the front desk how to get around and they suggested taxi. Two days later we had a 9 am reservation at Jay Fei and planned to use a taxi. At 8am we were at the hotel front desk and asked for a taxi. We were told 5-10 minutes but at 10 minutes there was still no taxi so we were told to continue to wait, but by 8:25 still no taxi. The manager told us they couldn’t get a taxi as it was rush hour. We ended up running to public transportation which normally is a 10 minute walk from the hotel. We then took the metro and had to run from that station to make our reservation on time. Running in 80 degree 91% humidity left us dripping in sweat. I am mad that the hotel was not honest. They should have said they could not get a taxi as then at least we could have walked to public transportation. This hotel is old. You can tell once you get in the room as it smell like a damp basement and the bathroom is old. The room was clean...
