The service was uninterested, slow, and forgetful, and the food lacked balance, quality, and flair. Lunch at Nahm was the only time I left a restaurant hungry in my six days in Bangkok.
First came the amuse bouches, and they were really interesting and beautifully presented. These canapés were the best part of the meal, and they left us excited to see what was coming next.
Thai fruit and vegetable salad - sugar, sugar, sugar. The dressing was supposed to be tamarind, palm sugar, and sesame, but I couldn't taste the sesame or the tamarind. There were a few herbs and leafy greens. I could see coriander in there but couldn't taste it over the sugar.
Hot and sour fish soup - this was okay.
Pak wan stir fried vegetables - okay to start, with a nice wok hei on the pak wan, but the garlic was obliterated by the salty sauce. Just like the fruit and vegetable salad, this dish utterly lacked balance or nuance.
Massaman "Muslim" oxtail curry - perhaps I made a mistake ordering this. I know that oxtail isn't a very meaty cut of meat. It's got a lot of cartilage, gristle, and bone, but I was expected Michelin-starred Nahm, the fifth-best restaurant in Asia, to do something impressive with it. However, this was awful beef, very gristly, and nearly impossible to get off the bone. There were no vegetables included in the dish save a couple of lonesome shallots and a piece of green pepper, and the flavour of the sauce was a lot like a packet of Massaman curry from the supermarket.
The Chantaburi chicken curry was the extra that I'd ordered with the set menu. It was the last item to arrive, because the waiter forgot it. We were pretty excited for it to come, hoping that it would redeem the earlier disappointments, but this was the worst dish of the lot. If you like gristle, salt, and spice, you'll probably like this dish. Try rubbing a big piece of chicken gristle with a hundred grams of salt and putting it in your mouth at the same time as a thai chile - you'll get the same taste as I did here. The menu said it was cooked with green banana and Thai basil, and I could see them, but I couldn't taste them. I'm a person who likes spicy food, but this was just salt and gristle on top of the spice. There was no point in eating it. Again, no balance, no nuance, no flair.
The dessert tasted exactly the same as the salad: sugar, sugar, sugar. I guess you expect sugar at dessert but this was too much: we couldn't taste any of the "tropical fruit", so there was no point to it. You may as well have poured a bottle of syrup down your throat; you'd probably have enjoyed it more.
As you can see, we didn't like the food. We didn't finish a single dish. You'd think the Michelin-starred waiters at Michelin-starred Nahm, the 28th-best restaurant in the world, might have asked if the food was okay, or if we had any problems. You'd think wrong. The service was generally terrible: they forgot one dish, they forgot a drink order, they kept coming with extra rice that we said we didn't want until we just took some on our plates to make them go away, and then at the end it took three tries to get the bill. The third time I had to go and find the waiter because there was nobody to ask on the restaurant floor. I wouldn't usually complain about small things like this, but it's a Michelin-starred restaurant which charged us 2400 baht for lunch, in Bangkok, where you can easily get something better for a hundred baht. At those prices the service should be impeccable. Nobody even asked us how the meal was. Maybe because they already know they're coasting on their reputation and overcharging tourists for...
Read moreI was hesitant to try Nahm for a long time, only because I've heard so many mixed reviews of the place.
Glad we gave it a go this time.
We were seated at a nice quiet spot and were greeted by our server, Jhun, who was very attentive and super nice all night. As soon as he approached our table he greeted us with our names (from our email booking) which I thought was a really nice touch.
I was quite dehydrated in this hot weather so I ordered water right away. I saw that the local water on the menu was super cheap compared to brand names so I asked to switch. 50 baht vs 300 baht. No issues there and Jhun changed it swiftly. I ordered a 2nd bottle right away. Yes I was thirsty!
Another sweet gesture was 2 complementary glasses of bubbly for our anniversary.
We were going to get the set menu at 2800 baht per person but it seemed like more food than what we felt like for tonight.
Amuse bouche was served with a nutty ball on a sliced of pineapple. It was actually really good. I wish we paid more attention to the description but we were scouring the menu for what would be most interesting.
We ended up ordering 3 dishes from their canapes section, 1 salad, 1 fish dish and 1 dessert to share.
Canapes:
Blue swimmer crab with peanuts and pickled garlic over rice cakes. (470 baht)
Egg nets with prawns, wild almonds and lime. (450 baht)
Steamed red curry of scallops. (450 baht)
Jhun warned us it might be too much as there were 5 pieces per dish. But since we weren't going heavy on mains, we kept the 3 canapes.
Crabtypical Thai flavors of sweet & sour. A little on the salty side but tasty enough.
Prawnsadmire the egg net skills but the dish itself was kinda flat.
Scallops~cooked in the same style as my fav steamed fish curry in banana leaves. Wasn't heavy on the curry which allowed the sweetness of the scallops to come thru.
Salad:
Grilled corn and prawn salad with lemongrass and wild almonds. (750 baht)
Ok dish tho the corn was a bit tough, prawns a little mushy. I enjoyed the crunchy lemongrass but gosh there were a lot of cilantro or similar leaves all over it. Too much!
Fish:
Steamed coral trout with beans and pickled garlic. (880 baht)
Actually a very well executed dish. Perfectly cooked fish, tasty sauce and hidden slices of delicious pork belly which made me so happy.
Mains are served with rice and they refill as much as you want.
We ordered 2 cocktails (330 baht each) to try. Mine was Siam Sunrays: Vodka, coconut cream, lemongrass, and chili. Pretty good. (Good job no plastic straw!) Hubby had an Old Fashioned which he enjoyed as well.
Dessert was a pleasant surprise. I ordered the Pandanus noodles in coconut cream with tapioca and sticky rice (350 baht). Turned out to be like my fav dessert with ice and other goodies. A sago coconut pudding was served on the side with 2 slices of fragrant pears. That was excellent. I truly loved the coconut cream. There was a faint smokiness to the sauce and a beautiful light Jasmine taste at the end. Just wonderfully complex for such a simple traditional dessert.
The end was topped off with a plate of delicious petit fours. Coconut pudding, mung bean yolk, peanut crisp with banana and a pandan coconut candy.
They helped us call a taxi as well. Overall it was an excellent experience because we enjoyed the service so much. Thank you Jhun and all the other staff who helped us!
Food was better than my expectations. I really wanted to love it but maybe it's the transition of exec chefs because it wasn't exactly up to what I envisioned for being #10 of Asia top 50...
I’ve been in the customer service industry for 20 years and empathize with people in my industry who put in long hours and their heart into building something great such as a Michelin restaurant. So it hurts me to have to take the time to write a negative review here on TripAdvisor. With that said, Nahm is a restaurant to AVOID.
It deserves ZERO stars. Zero for the food quality (Salty beyond edible, and just plain terrible) and zero for the service (Staff and mgmt did not care, and tried to argue with me when I escalated)
We booked a restaurant reservation on a Monday at 930PM for 2. I have a meeting at slightly before midnight the same evening and needed to leave after 11PM or latest half past that. Unfortunately the restaurant seating was delayed to 945-950PM even though we reached around 920PM because according to their door “the rain has delayed people from leaving”. I’ve let the front desk, my server, and a second server, nicely, that i needed to go by 11-115PM and that my seating was late.
Ordered: Appetizer: Crab on crackers + leaf wrapped pork Soup: Tom Yong Goon + Ginger Soup Salad: Salad with fruit and with fish (Don’t recall name) Mains: Oxtail Curry and Steamed Prawns with Thai Chili Ordered a glass of wine each and a bottle of sparking water.
Despite requesting from 3 people to expedite our food due to the late seating, our appetizers came 20 minutes after ordering.
After 45 minutes sitting down, our soup, nor salad, nor main arrived. Yet despite this, a local thai table next to ours was getting the VIP treatment, including 3 chefs coming over together two separate times to hand serve the food to this table. I later found out this was their ex chef.
I had to escalate to the rest of the dishes and 20 minutes before I had to go, they started to come. One main course came (Oxtail curry) with salad. 10 minutes before I had to go, soup came and the second main. Except they forgot the Ginger soup and only brought Tom Yong Goon.
The food came incredibly salty. We’ve read some reviews here that the food could be salty so we have asked our server during ordering to please make it not so salty. I guess this was lost in the shuffle or fell on deaf ears as their entire team was trying to please the table next to ours.
The only thing not salty were one of the appetizers (Crab on crackers) and the oxtail curry, which we ate a small portion of. Due to the rest being inedible and being out of time, we basically left the others on the table except to taste a bite or two.
I wouldn’t have posted a negative review like this except that I have escalated the issue of food not being here twice and once they did it being too salty and inedible On top of this no server cared for our table as the water was never even topped off.
I do not understand how this restaurant is rating 4 on tripadvisor and even further, do not understand how this place has a michelin star.
Please avoid this place and...
