The real plus of the Lazz City Hotel - one of a huge crops of tiny family-run hotels in the buzzy, bustling Nevizade area of Instanbul (about a 10-minute downhill stroll from Taksim Square) - is its location. It's in the heart of the action.|But that's also the minus. Apart from the relatively quiet Sunday and Monday nights, you can still hear the thump, thump, thump of nightclub music reverberating through the walls and double-glazed windows as late as 3am. Only by 4am is it all silent.|The Lazz is a smoking hotel. It doesn't mind smokers; each room has an ashtray. It took 48 hours of open windows to rid the stench from the previous occupants.|There are a dozen rooms, but the lift only goes up five floors, so if you have room 601 or 602 you have to manhandle your luggage, and you, up and down a precipitous spiral staircase with a single vertical handrail. This can be really challenging at night after a glass or two.|The lift is tiny. Two people maximum, or one with luggage.|I booked through booking.com, which calculated the eight nights at a very reasonable £455 for the room, depending on currency fluctuation. The Turkish lire had weakened, so it was a surprise when £536 was demanded at the desk. Booking.com insisted all major credit cards were taken, but although all SIX of our credit & debit cards worked perfectly in 50 bars, restaurants and attractions across Istanbul all week, not one worked in the Lazz machine. The owner rang his bank and insisted it wasn't a fault at his end. To prove it, he used his own credit card in his own machine. It was rejected! But it meant all four in our party, spread across three rooms, had to make several journeys to the banks' cashpoints to draw out huge wads of notes to pay the hotel in cash. That landed us with hefty extra charges, despite the owner saving on credit card commission. Not happy! The initial £455 wound up as £625 with all the additional charges. Beware.|Breakfast is fine - a clingfilmed plate of processed cheese, jam, tomato and olives with good fresh bread and coffee or tea. You have to ask for your room to be cleaned, then holey, threadbare towels are replaced with similar.|Room service is available, supplied by an outside restaurant via a QR code. We didn't try it. There are fridges in the room, but the promised 'city view' consisted of a nearby low rooftop covered in debris.|With so many other hotels to choose from - literally 50 within 200 yards - I think you can do better. And a 40% mark-up on the room rate from the booking.com figure still rankles.|As we left, the owner said: 'Give us 10/10 on booking.com'. Get a card machine that works like every other card machine in Istanbul, would...

Read moreThis hotel should be avoided. During my stay, first I have received room that I haven't booked (The bathroom didn't have proper place and space for showering. Also, there wasn't cold water on the tap above the sink). The next day they gave me me room with normal bathroom. Unfortunately, the next day, hotel started with big reconstruction of the room across my new room-on the same floor. They were using strong concrete drill to break and remove outside wall of room. The reconstruction made huge noise, dust and reconstruction trash, which unable calm stay in accommodation and caused a lot of stress level during my vacation period. In parallel, there was a water disappearing a few minutes due to reconstruction in hotel. I was discussing with hotel owner and he promised that reconstruction will be ended that that day, however it was lie. Hotel manager is very...
