I stayed here a few days in early May and loved it. Nothing fancy because there is a war on, but the staff was great and you can tell they appreciate our support. I thought the breakfast was good. Again, nothing fancy, but it was healthy, there was plenty, and the little croissants were really, really good. Loved the coffee, too. There is a nice view from the restaurant.||The attractive, young lady that checked me in let me get in the room early which was a godsend if you take the night train into Kyiv. The sweetheart working the cloak room watched my bag for me after check out and reminded me of the good spirit that persists in Ukraine despite the daily hardships of war. This too, is a godsend, if you are taking the night train back to Warsaw.||The hotel is very central, and the view from my balcony was amazing, both day and night. Currently there is a memorial for fallen troops left front of hotel. You can buy a little Ukrainian flag from an old couple that are there almost every day, and place the flag next to the numerous photos of lives cut short. There is an underground mall directly in front of the hotel, and under street cross walks that make walking very easy. There are a plethora of restaurants, pubs, and souvenir shops in a half mile radius. A super nice post office is right across the street. The national bank and art museum are up the hill and behind the hotel and this street is blocked, but there is also extra security in this area. Witnessing the pattern of tracers and search lights, it was my opinion that this hotel is in a very safe location. My room had a refrigerator for beverages and a chair that fit on the balcony for enjoying the evening festivities. Sleeping in was easy and comfortable…but, try not to miss breakfast. ||The hotel is big and open, with four elevators and a marble staircase to the restaurant, the echoes of restrained grandeur are prevalent. It has a cool vibe of Soviet secrets shrouded in dim corners. I’m betting the guest list would raise eyebrows in my university political science department. ||The lobby bartender in the afternoon each day reminded me of the stalwart pier piling that had weathered storm after storm and still stands strong. The lines in his face and sparkle in his eyes translated more with less. I enjoyed my Jack and Coke Zero each day upon return and considered myself fortunate to have crossed his path. I very much enjoyed my stay at this hotel, and certainly will never forget my temporary camaraderie with the friendly, helpful, and tough Ukrainians making my stay an oasis in a beautiful, bustling, but beleaguered city. I will stay here...

My review is more relevant for the couples and for the families with small kids. This hotel is not a 4 star hotel and it is not family oriented (they don't advertise that they are, but…there is always but). Here is why: The management does not understand that guests especially with young children should not receive the rooms with cracking floor or freezing rooms without hot water when it is -14 outside. There were many small bids that either fell off in the bathroom (broken shower, constantly running water in the toilet) or in the room (a sofa that did not hold together), but the biggest and major point was the floor. It was an old parquet floor which was squeaking and cracking every time you made a small step in any direction anywhere in both rooms. The hotel service said that they could not do anything about it and besides we got the only one family room in the whole hotel. Seriously? You should not put the children in the rooms where it is cold or the floor is broken. You should check the rooms for hot water when it is -14 outside. You should heat up the food at breakfast all the time. No one likes cold scrambled eggs! You should fix the elevators and reorganize their work. We waited for the elevator for 7-10 minutes every time. You should not put the locker on the out side of the door to the bathroom, it should be inside (people want to get privacy inside the bathroom but they don't want to be locked). It is simple...

Facilities good, there were some commercial shootings at the hotel and these people were blocking the ways to almost every way, they even tried to prevent my to using the restrooms but I disregarded their demand, they were using big lights that most of the time were not in use, generating even more heat adding to the hot temperature at the time, not to mentioned that they hurt the eyes because if their intensity, really disgusting and out of taste of the people doing it in complete disregard of the hotel guests, I guess exhibiting themselves and trying to be noticed, but who the he'll cares about it, the hotel staff needs to be .ore knowledgeable of ukraine, history, local leisure activities and mostly tour plans going on in the city of Kiev, I stayed 5 nights and requested a remote control, the first answer I got was: temperature is good you will be okay, it was until my 3rd day after repearedly requesting the damn remote that I finally got it, breakfast included in the price was very good with plenty of choices, but is seems that ice cubes are a luxury here, my rating of the hotel is a 3 in a...

The reception staff were polite, professional and spoke English. The decor was quality old soviet style and the view was amazing. However the hotels in Ukraine insist on you paying at the beginning of your stay, not the end. I assume the is a vestige of soviet times. This seemed to become a real problem if you turn up for breakfast without paying beforehand. This threw the Restaurant staff into a tizz and they became rood, stroppy and flustered, multiplied by them struggling to understand basic English (Google translator became essential here). They really struggled with the concept of the bill being paid when you left. If Ukrainian hotels want to become credible, modern European options, they need to embrace the western standard of customer service and adopt the worlds Lingua Franca (English). Were it not for the acerbic experience in the restaurant, this would have been a 5 star review, because everything else was perfect.

If you want a random well priced Ukrainian experience where you find random things like butter in the fire cupboard or abandoned floors in the hotel this is the place for you. It was well priced and added to our experience of this mental, random and wonderful city. We loved this place - the furnishings were original, the decor was very tired (and I wouldn’t touch that bedspread with a barge pole) but it was clean and basic; a good base. The breakfast was very comprehensive in an ostentatious grand room facing independence square - which gave a real sense and reminder of the history this hotel has been involved in. The lifts were pretty sketchy and I would not step foot out on the balcony if my life depended on it, by the staff, breakfast and atmosphere made up for it. Great food round the corner at Chicken Kyev which knocks the socks off of the chicken Kiev’s we normally buy from Aldi.

I rarely ever leave reviews and have traveled all around the world and stayed in countless hotels, but I’ve never been treated so rudely, as I have tonight by the receptionist Olga. Not only did it take 20 minutes of waiting, which I currently am still waiting, but Olga’s attitude for no reason ruined my excitement and experience of Hotel Ukraine. Hotel management should fire her immediately as it leads me to believe she is acting this way as a racist. No other reason to prompt her behavior. No guest should have the first interaction of an extremely rude receptionist. Even another guest commented “she is incredibly rude”. It’s Friday Feb 28th at 10:10pm. I suggest you have a conversation with her immediately. I write for Forbes press on travel and will consider posting my experience there as well.
