I completed my first solo coast to coast crossing on 7 August ‘23. During my crossing I made friends with other trail buddies and we walked and camped/bunked together. It was an incredible experience that will stay with me forever. ||One of the joys of the trip was coming across little gems of places along the route to eat, sleep, visit etc. Kirkby Stephen Hostel is one of those gems! Perfectly located in the centre of town close to all those important places when doing the C2C - chemist for foot repairs, pub, fish and chip shop, camping shop to replenish gear, supermarket for provisions. ||After a persistent heavy rain day a group of 4 of us swung by on the off chance there may be a room. ||What a brilliant decision. The door was locked but a phone number posted on the door took us straight to the lovely Denise, the owner. She brightly gave us the code to the door, and bunk room numbers, and said make yourselves at home, I’ll see you in the morning. ||Wow. An amazing and brilliant place. A beautiful fun large building perfect for socialising and hanging out. It is a clean and warm budget friendly hostel that has all the facilities you want for preparing food, comfortable bunk rooms, clean shower/toilet facilities, a great drying room. ||Denise met us in the morning and was full of useful tips and advice about all things C2C and the area. ||It was a real pleasure to stay and 100% I will return.||Sent...
Read moreBooked a two night stay as attending a wedding at a near by venue.. the rooms are clean if a little dated ( three bed on suite) our booking. There is a shared kitchen with all amenities, very open (converted church) dinning communal area. On arrival our details for checking in were very easy, and we spoke to the lady to ask about parking, she was lovely. There is parking at the front but time limited, but at the rear there is main road to park with a walkable access back. We were asked by the lady if everything was ok even asked if we needed anything, hairdryer, iron etc so if you have left anything at home pls ask and I'm sure you can be sorted. The building is on the main road but we didn't hear any traffic noise, walking distance to a variety of cafes, shops bars etc.. With it being an old church conversion it was a little cool but we did have an electric heater in our room which was really pleasant. One bed was quite firm which suited me, and the other two were softer. Bedding is provided, and towels can be hired ( we took our own).. bring your own toiletries but often there are a few bits in main area available if you have forgotten. Remember this is a hostel, no TVs or kettles in rooms, free WiFi with relevant codes if needed. Very well lite area with lights all around your outside entrance. Enjoyed our stay, and carnt the lady enough she was...
Read moreThis place was disappointing. My first online payment failed. However, I only found this out when I arrived at the hostel and they had no record of my payment. It would have been better to have been emailed about this sooner. The hostel is located in a disused church on the high street. This makes for quite an interesting place to stay. However, the condition of the building is starting to look rather shabby. A lick of paint, some better signage, and some new carpets would not go a miss. The staff were friendly but also quite scruffy and not very efficient at working in a front of house setting. The sort of people you would like to have a pint with but not the sort of people who are very good at managing accommodation. During my stay I met a few classic YHA (hostel) characters. The slightly odd bloke with a weird dress sense, the person who does not stop talking, and some germans. At £20 a night, if you are looking for the cheap hostel experience Kirkby Stephen Hostel will meat your needs. However, it could do with being managed a...
