It’s very rare that I feel the need to leave a bad review, but this place deserves one. I travel a lot and have stayed in a lot of places, it’s incredibly rare that I find such a poor place but unfortunately managed it in York. I stayed here in April with 3 friends, we each had our own room. We were a group of sensible 40 something men just looking to experience York. The couple running this place however had formed preconceptions of us based on our gender, so the point where we had a call several weeks prior to feel us out. Not a problem, they wanted reassurance that we were not lager louts. It seems though that Heidi wasn’t very reassured and we received the frostiest welcome imaginable. My friends and I could only look at each other in the hallway in bemusement of the rudeness of this horrible woman. So the stay didn’t get off to the best start, but we were only sleeping in the guesthouse and would be out all day returning each night at around 11pm. The room wasn’t particularly clean, there were crisp crumbs on the floor, the remains of a what appeared to be a box on the floor (more on that later), and the towels were like drying yourself with sandpaper and didn’t smell at all nice. There were ‘Karen’ signs everywhere! “don’t leave this on”, “don’t leave that on” etc which gave the place a really tacky, low-end accommodation feel. The shower didn’t work properly as the bracket holding it was poor and you had to hold it up. The road is noisy, not helped by the window being open for the whole stay, but it was that hot that it needed to be. I could have ignored all of these foibles though if the shocking attitude of the landlords hadn’t reared it’s head again after the stay. I received an email to say they were charging me for a blind that had been broken, they went on to mention a broken slat found on the floor. The penny dropped for me then, what I thought was a piece of cardboard not cleaned up from a previous guest was in fact a little piece of the blind. This was on the floor when I first entered the room, the window was open at the time and I had left it open due to the warmth in the room, so didn’t go near the blind. Blaming me for stuff I haven’t done is a great way to really get my back up, and the way they went about it was poor. I would have preferred they ask me about it, a conversation may have mitigated it. This was the straw that broken the camels back for me. I terrible stay had tuned into one I would rather forget. Needless to say I wouldn’t recommend this place, it’s not in a particularly good location, the owners are very rude, judgemental people, I can’t help but feel the B&B life isn’t for them. They take no pride in what they do and that is reflected in the...
Read moreWe booked on booking.com at the listed price. Booking.com says they accept Visa and in all the emails we received from the property there was never a specification that we must pay cash, only one that they preferred it. However, when we arrived we were told we must pay cash (which we didn't have) or an additional fee. When I noted this on the booking site review, they called me a liar and said that I didn't bother reading the information. There were other issues as well: They advertised onsite parking with reservation and when I reserved on Booking I requested parking, believing this to be the required reservation. Only on the day of my stay - when I was in transit all day and had no way of accessing emails - they sent an email saying I had to call. I had to park several blocks away. The listing says garden view. There was no garden in sight. Nobody came up to show us the room, and as a result we couldn't figure out how to use the shower, which required an electric pull cord before operating. (It would have been nice to have instructions or someone tell us.) Most of this would have been minor, but they are misleading at best. I doubt they would have tried something like that if...
