We loved the Lighthorseman! Hotel and pub each get the full 5 stars. The pub/hotel is in a beautiful historic building and the staff? SO super kind. We would absolutely recommend the Lighthorseman to anyone coming to York.
We stayed for 3 nights in the family room the last week of December. We were able to check in a bit early and Dan met us at the hotel entrance. He was so kind and helpful. He took us up to the family room and made sure we were completely settled, giving us the rundown of the apartment and things to do in the neighborhood. The apartment is over two floors and was incredibly comfortable for our family. The bathroom has been renovated and has a nice hot shower and plenty of towels. The kitchen was great for us with a good sized fridge, kettle, and coffee and tea at the ready. The living room was comfortable enough for our whole family (including teenagers) to relax and watch movies together in the evening. The sofa turns into a bed which worked for one of our kids and the rest of the beds were SUPER comfortable (that's coming from someone with back pain). There are radiators in each space which we could turn on if it got chilly but even in December it wasn't too cold.
We also took full advantage of the pub downstairs. The building itself is beautiful and the pub is no exception. We enjoyed a lunch our first day, went down in the evening for a light dinner, and paid for breakfast one day. Whoever checks you in will tell you: breakfast is not included, it's an extra charge. That was fine with us so we paid for it one morning. I believe Molly was in the kitchen that morning? We got a full English breakfast - black pudding is an option if you want it! - and it was really delicious. We went down in the evening a couple nights to grab a pint. It was a very relaxed atmosphere. The neighborhood is about a 15 minute walk to the city center, which is quite easy, and there's also a bus stop about a one minute walk from the pub. There is a Sainsbury grocery store about a 5 minute walk away as well as plenty of other restaurants. One of the folks working the pub told us about an entrance to the river walk, so we took a stroll down there, too.
The cost we paid for 3 nights was very reasonable, especially since we were in a larger space. It's hard to find spots for families of more than 4 people but the Lighthorseman is a gem. We would absolutely recommend it to anyone traveling to York and we wouldn't hesitate to stay...
Read moreWe loved staying here. A "Jolly" in York for Christmas. My friend, who is partially sighted and has a guide dog were so cared for here in this lovely place. Our host Dan was terrific. Lovely, simple room with bathroom and shower and loo. Very comfortable beds. Nothing fussy and everything was clean with toiletries. We were looked after so well by Dan. Great breakfast with cereals, fruit juice and Yoghurt and full Yorkshire. Just minutes from hotel was stairs to the riverside walk. We took the dog there and he was well pleased. Sadly both my friend and her dog became very ill and Dan was very kind ensuring my friend got a taxi to Station. I stayed on and after I saw my friend safely on her train, and explored York. Beautiful city and so much to see. Christmas market was on but nothing really special, sadly, but walking up and down the little lanes then retreating to the Three Tuns Pub for a cuppa - that is a must go and see place. Fab food and so friendly. Then a lovely walk back along the river. Good afternoon sleep was required. |In the evening I had lovely couple of Chicken wraps with chips at the Hotel. Twas lovely. ||After a great breakfast, Dan called me a cab and I got on my train home. ||If anything was untoward about York it was the buses, Finding the right one and where was almost impossible. ||If we come back to York we'll be back to see Dan and the stay at The Lighthorseman. Thanks Dan...
Read moreWe were staying nearby and The Lighthorseman looked promising so we decided to try it for dinner but unfortunately it was a disappointment. After arrival we were shown to the dining room and given menus. |We waited for someone to take our order but after some time we asked the lady who|showed us to our table and were told we needed to order at the bar. I ordered the Chicken, Mushroom and Leek pie for my husband and the chicken skewers for myself. A short time later the young man at the bar came to our table to explain that they were out of chicken skewers so I chose the same meal as my husband. When my husband ordered the drinks - a beer for himself and a Pinot Grigio|for me, he was told they were out of the Pinot Grigio so I then chose a Rose which they were also out of. He asked for some other wine options but these were also unavailable but eventually was able to get a 200ml bottle of Prosecco.|While we were waiting for our meals there was an issue with some ladies at another table who were upset with their meals.|Our meals were tasty but we had eaten at a pub close by the night before and had been extremely happy with the food, service, atmosphere and drinks there. The Lighthorseman’s atmosphere, service and variety of wines was a letdown. There are much better...
