York Cemetery — Local services in Great Britain

This cemetery appears to be in a fairly poor state of upkeep, whilst efforts are being made to neaten it up large portions of the cemetery are overgrown with weeds and headstones leaning dangerously over. It’s a real shame as there are many very old graves that are seemingly left and not looked after.

Regarding opening hours, they are ridiculously shorty, anyone who works or goes to school isn’t going to be able to visit a grave as it closes at 4pm most days so far as I can tell. I can’t imagine what possible reason it has to close early, very sad for those who can’t make it...

This is an amazing, beautiful and interesting place with a packed event programme or you can just go for a lovely walk there. Lots of wildlife can be spotted here. I've seen owls, a deer, fox... Genealogy on Fridays and special open days with very knowledgeable volunteers. There are only about 3 paid staff and the rest are all dedicated volunteers. The staff here were lovely and very helpful, despite all of the difficulties and restrictions associated with having a funeral during a pandemic. Covid secure measures are in place and capacity in the Chapel is therefore limited, but ramped access and careful administration allowed a respectful and seamless service.
