The best part of coming to York was finding a terrific place to enjoy meals. We found that place at Mason Arms. In fact, in our 5 days in York we ate 3 dinners there.
From the moment we came in our first night we were greeted with warmth from all the staff. They were all very friendly, especially Defney, who treated us like family.
Besides being in a restaurant that was warm and welcoming, we were treated with the very best in home cooking. No pub fare here. Just great meals, and lots of it.
Our first visit, I had lamb shank and my husband had beef cheek (no pics). Both meals were delicious. The lamb fell off the bone and the minted gravy was a great accompaniment. The beef was equally impressive.
Fish and chips was the meal on our second visit and it was the best fish and chips we have tasted in our 3 week stay in England. The fish was cooked perfectly and the chips were great. Mushy peas were also very flavourful.
The crowning glory was having a Sunday dinner (in our now favourite corner of the restaurant, served by Defney) of roast beef, potatoes, vegetables and Yorkshire pudding. The meal was huge and I couldn’t eat it all and my husband struggled. We had warm apple pie and custard for dessert and it was great.
This restaurant isn’t in the touristic area of York but a short walk from many hotels. It seems like most of the clientele are locals who know where to find a great meal.
We highly recommend this restaurant and you will be treated like family and served a home cooked...
Read moreComfortable pub room but very small with limited space to move around. A large chair in a corner of what is already limited space made getting round the bed difficult. Suitable for a 1/2 night stay . Not very accessible as a room on an upper floor with a metal staircase which can be slippery when wet.
Car Park is situated down a narrow lane between the pub and another building off a busy main road. Has limited spaces and tight however the staff were helpful in directing us to where we could park with other people leaving. Bad parking on the part of others meant a space couldn't be used.
The pub was excellent with table service, good food and real ales from Black Sheep brewery. Staff were super friendly and kept us topped up all evening. we found out the pub is very dog friendly with quite a few in on the Friday night. I wasn't keen on that on a busy evening tripping over dog leads.
Location is handy for a walk or bus into York town centre, the shambles market etc and if you want cheaper food or drink wetherspoons is across the road (you get what you pay for though).
Room facilities were great considering the price point with a mini fridge, tea and coffee, wi-fi and ensuite shower. Quiet enough at night for a good comfortable sleep. Lose the chair though. Some bedding and curtains looked worn and could...
Read moreBooked a table for lunch for my partners birthday for 8 people and 1 dog. The Mason's Arms is a beautiful, traditional pub on the edge of York City centre. The staff were really friendly, especially our lovely waitress, who's name I can't remember. She was very accommodating and quite knowledgeable about the pub itself. The food was amazing, the portions were pretty big too. The only reason I have given 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the parking. I specifically rang the week before and was told they had parking for patrons, one of our party cannot walk very far so this was important. We had 3 cars to park and the car park was minute and difficult to get in and out of. We were then told that we couldn't all park there as the spaces were prioritised for residents staying at the pub. Luckily they had one space free for mum, who can't walk. My partner and his son had to go find a parking space in York on a Saturday afternoon, not an easy task. It nearly spoilt the day as they took so long to find somewhere. It all worked out in the end and everyone had a lovely time. We will be coming back but will park elsewhere...
