We stayed here in Aug 24. Very disappointing, not the 5*stay we had hoped for. We booked this hotel months ago. When we checked in, they tried to charge us more than it should have been, but we had taken a copy of our booking with us, so the amount was corrected. When we checked out, they tried to charge us for room service we hadn’t had. When that was removed from our bill, they again tried to overcharge us, a different amount from the amount when we checked in, so again this had to be rectified. The rooms are big with plenty of storage space. We booked a deluxe king room. The room we were given was an accessible room, so had the red emergency cords. The toilet was very high and the bathroom top where the sink was, had partly come away from the wall. We couldn’t turn the bathroom towel rail off, so reported this to reception around 7pm on the first night. Nobody came to sort it out, so we reported it again the next morning. By 10am it still hadn’t been fixed, although it was turned off by the time we got back in late that afternoon. The bed wasn’t a king size, it was 2 singles put together. We could feel the ridge in the middle from the edges of the mattresses. We reported this to reception the first morning. They said it would be sorted, but it wasn’t. The covering on the handles of the bedside drawers - one was missing and one was hanging off. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. We had dinner on our second night. As my partner needed gluten free options, we were given the allergen guide. The meals listed on the allergen guide weren’t the same meals as on the menu and some items on the allergen guide were not marked as containing gluten when they did (eg - Bakewell tart). This could have resulted in serious consequences if we hadn’t noticed. This was our second visit, the first visit was much better. We won’t be returning.

When I was visiting Manchester, I was surprised to see that the Lowry had advertised some excellent room rates, even for a midweek in March. I had my eye on the place for a while, so the day before I was due to check out my hotel, I visited the Lowry to have a look around, where I was met with a very friendly and welcoming reception. I think they appreciated the fact I expressed an interest and took the time to visit them. Ted asked if I would like to see some rooms. I was so impressed by the two rooms he showed me that I decided to extend my stay in Manchester, and booked a room there and then, checking in the next day. When I expressed an interest in a room with a bath, Ted upgraded me to room 629, which has a separate bath and shower, as well as a separate closet/wardrobe room. It’s worth noting that this room has a 12 foot ceiling (or thereabouts), different modes of lighting and has a door adjoining the presidential suite, of which Shannon later gave me a viewing. On that note, I have to thank Ted, Shannon, Declan, Sydney, the breakfast staff, the bar staff and housekeeping for looking after me during my stay. I’d also like to express a separate thank you to maintenance for covering up the flashing light on the smoke detector in my room as this was interrupting my sleep at night. I believe his name is AJ. The staff were all very accommodating and nothing was a bother for them. I do recommend the breakfast, and it’s a short walk from the hotel into the centre. I think it’s worth mentioning though that there was a gideons bible in my room. Reception did remove it at my request. However I can’t help but think that this does raise questions on the hotel’s policy on diversity and inclusion towards its guests and staff. Therefore, I do welcome the commitment from Alistair Risk, the Lowry’s Director of Operations, to look into the matter.

Slightly disappointed not to be acknowledged in any way as returning guests-even just a welcome back would have been suffice. We have stayed in other 5 star hotels and been gifted chocolates, drinks or welcome note in the room when returning even if only once. I had emailed the hotel in advance and asked for our rooms to be close to each other if possible. Chiara sent a speedy reply to say this had been sorted and that our rooms were in fact next to each other in a quiet part of the hotel as requested. On arrival at check in we were told one room was on floor 2 and the other on 4, I explained I had spoken via email and then had to show the email. After calling housekeeping they were able to give us rooms 3014 and 3017 a few doors apart on the third floor. Only 1 room was ready so we had to wait for the second room. After putting all luggage in the one room we headed to the bar and the service was impeccable as usual. Rooms spacious and cleaned to a high standard with all the amenities needed. Beds are amazingly comfortable with great quality linen. I feel the toiletries could be more upmarket as the ones in there I hadn’t heard of, and didn’t smell luxurious. The toilet roll was Andrex which is a plus as thin toilet roll in high end establishments doesn’t fit. Breakfast has a vast choice from cereals, meats and cheeses to pastries and cooked breakfast- you can also each order one item off the menu to be cooked fresh. Parking is available to residents for £15 and an access code is given to exit the car park. All in all another beautiful stay at The Lowry, we will indeed most probably stop there again in future-it would just be nice to get a “nice to see you again”

Adele in reception was the highlight. She gave outstanding 5* service and got my trip off to a great start.

But, after that, the 5*'s that the Lowry boasts became harder and harder to believe. The foyer is fine, nothing too great. The decor & design everywhere else is like a noughties local authority building at best. At worst it's clinical enough to be a hospital. There's no rhyme or reason to what they've done. The floors with bedrooms have hallways that feel like a bland airport hanger. The 3 misplaced & dusty cabinets outside the spa could never be present in any self respecting 5* hotel. The place is bursting with artificial plants - I didn't see one real plant throughout my stay. The room was fine. Beds are comfortable.

The breakfast was interesting. On the face of it, lots of selection and it's good quality. But, simple things are badly wrong. The grapefruit juice is fizzy and having worked serving breakfast in a hotel before I know it's because its not changed or cleaned often enough. I don't want to guess how long it was sitting in the glass jar. This is fine in a 3 or 4 star hotel, but not at this level when you're paying so much money.

The food from the kitchen was average. The staff carry coffee and tea to your table by the cup handle, not by the saucer and not on a tray. It's bad at the best of times, but it's not really cool when we're still in the midst of a pandemic.

There are red units where staff dump dirty crockery and glasses across the floor instead of bringing straight to the kitchen. The units are dirty. It's bad for hygiene and brings a really messy look to the overall breakfast room. The floor is dirty with used sugar sachets scattered across them.

The place is well staffed, but there's no organisation or leadership in how the team operate. Some staff are brilliant, others care slightly less.

Overall, standards are not high enough for this place to be 5*. It feels like they're living off the coat tails of having some Man United celebs staying from time to time and they are therefore justified in charging what they do. It's very clearly a management issue - the staff are doing what they're directed to do and I couldn't criticise any of them. The decor needs an uplift. 5* hotels should be unique and refined. This is neither.

I...

What was supposed to be a great double birthday weekend for my partner and i ( mine being the seventeenth, hers the Eighteenth) at the prestigious Lowry, turned out to be a masterclass in style over content, and i am being generous in my summing up of this hotel. Firstly, my partner paid £366 for a river view room. We got put on the corner with a cracking view of the apartment block opposite. To cheer ourselves up, we had a peroni out the mini bar, but alas, no bottle opener, so being inventive, i had to use the door frame latch. This is basics, Lowry! We had a toilet with a flush that went on forever, and a strange light by the skirting board we couldn’t switch off ( it’s ok, i used a cushion to block it) After returning from our evening out, we fancied watching a film. After ITV hub would not load up after several attempts, we gave up, and went to sleep. I was really hoping that a decent breakfast would rescue this stay, but alas, it was freezing cold, the black pudding was as hard as rock, and the only hot item was the coffee i requested. Absolutely dire! It seems the best was truly saved for the last, when my fiancee came to return the key cards, a rude member of staff accused her of not paying for the room. This was with a throng of customers behind her. She had. The operative at the paying desk had got our room number wrong ( citing 627, ours was 624) my partner was hugely embarrassed by this staff members rude behaviour, and humiliated, despite the staff member being completely unjustified in her dreadful attitude. I was outside taking a call, and she came out feeling completely humiliated and angry. Having stayed in several of my cities decent hotels ( Gotham, the Hilton et al) i can truly say I’ve had better service at a Travelodge. Were you worth £366 for a night of just bed and breakfast? Absolutely not. I actually feel robbed, and shall endeavour to inform any of my friends and family who may get any ideas that you are worth visiting, to steer clear. I am appalled you actually state yourself...
