This was the 5th one night stay in a hotel on my current trip. Three of them have been great and two were pretty awful. The Stroud is certainly up there with the good ones. If I understand well from my friends in Stroud, it has recently been refurbished and that has been done with taste. I loved the bedroom and the bathroom (see photos) and both had some very nice touches. I especially liked the pale green night lights, the lighting behind the headboard of the very comfortable bed and the lovely mirror and clothes rack in the bedroom. Normally I prefer a closed clothes cupboard to an open rack but the one here, in wood, was a work of art. I also loved the minimalistic sign about towel changes (see photo) which effectively achieves its purpose without trying to make you feel guilty about environmental impacts.
That's all not to say that a few improvements could be made, especially in the bathroom. For older people like myself, this would benefit from having hand grips whilst standing in the shower and for getting out of the bath. The bathroom mirror could be replaced by fitting a mirror in three parts with hinged wings to allow a view of the back of the head and, though the hand gel is of good quality I personally prefer a small tablet of soap for shaving purposes. Also the little hallway leading to rooms 15 (my room) and 16 could benefit from having automated lighting.
The hotel bedrooms are on the first and second floor and there is no lift, so the hotel is not really suitable for persons of reduced mobility. I think though, that the stairway to the first floor would be wide enough to allow the installation of a stair lift.
The staff are extremely welcoming and very helpful. Add the free parking area - though this has limited space allocated on a first come basis - and the proximity to the station and you have all the ingredients for an almost perfect stay in what is a charming town set in beautiful countryside. Pity I could only stay one night; I very much hope to return for a...
Read moreStaff at the hotel are nice, breakfast in the morning is great.
Hotel needs to address noise insulation. I stayed 3 nights and was routinely awoken by loud people outside, and deliveries in the morning.
The windows are thin, even when closed, they offer virtually no sound insulation. Kegs are delivered a few mornings per week starting just after 5:30am. It is an excruciatingly loud ordeal. Yelling by the delivery man doesn't make it any better.
Maybe if I could get to bed earlier, I could deal with a too early wakeup. Unfortunately, the bar has a patio, music bumps out there until closing time at 10 or 11 every night. Then the staff noisily move some outdoor furniture around after close.
Being next to a train station is convenient, but you can regularly hear the train through the thin windows. The central location in town is convenient, but also means you can hear loud drunk people outside as at least a couple people cause a ruckus most nights.
In addition to sound insulation, the hotel needs some kind of climate control in the rooms. As they are upstairs they run at least 10 degrees warm; in the summer, that makes for a sweaty night. Air conditioning or even a fan could overcome the temp issue and provide some noise to drown out some city noise. However, it couldn't overcome the keg delivery. The hotel really needs to do something about a man throwing dozens of 10-50 kilo steel tanks on the ground before 6am outside the hotel.
Interior noise insulation could also be improved. Other guests walking by in the hallway sound as if they are in your room. Sound can be heard through the floor from the bar downstairs.
The room is fairly nice. It could use a place to put a suitcase that is elevated and not the bed or desk.
I would not stay here again and find a pub in a...
Read moreThoroughly enjoyed my stay here.|The staff at this hotel are unfailingly helpful and friendly and went above and beyond to help me when I got stranded here due to Storm Floris and train cancellations. They weren't able to accommodate me for the extra night but helped with sourcing other hotels and gave me a lift to my next accommodation once sorted. I am travelling alone with an invisible disability including mobility issues. They were so helpful and really kind at a time when I was feeling quite stressed. In addition to this exceptional thoughtfulness, the food was very good especially breakfast, well worth adding this to your room. The chef clearly cares about what he puts on a plate and it shows. The best breakfast! The rooms are comfortable, the showers great and it was lovely to have some pleasant non smoking outdoor space to enjoy in the good weather. The hotel is central and as such, not quiet at the weekends, especially with windows open to cope with the heat and a lively well used bar and restaurant. But the atmosphere is great. Again, whilst it's hot in the upstairs bedrooms, fans were supplied and staff doing all they can to keep rooms cool despite the heat wave. I really enjoyed my stay here. I couldn't walk very far so spent a lot of time in the hotel public spaces when not meeting up with family and enjoyed my time here a great deal. Quiet leisurely mornings and lively evenings. A good combination for me. | Should I need to revisit Stroud, I'd have no hesitation in staying again. Thank you...
