We may have thought we were staying in the Finlen Hotel, but after one night, it seemed more like the Cecil. Where to begin? We usually don't pay over $100 for a room, but we both enjoy older architecture and design. We felt this would be a really cool place to stay. We were tired from a long drive, so we decided to have a quick nap after check-in. It was around 3:30 in the afternoon. About 20 minutes later, our door opens! Snaps me wide awake. I open the door and see a young woman and a much older man. I ask if everything is ok, and the woman stated that she worked there and she had made a mistake. I asked if she had a master key or if she had a key to the room (the hotel had actual locks and keys, no electronics). She didn't answer, but asked my name and wanted to see my I.D. I was still a little stunned, so I showed her and asked if she really worked there and was assured that was the case. A few minutes later, I went downstairs to find out more information, and guess who was at the desk? The woman who had come into our room. She said sorry, sorry, sorry a bunch, but like Vizzini in the Princess Bride, I don't think that word means what she thinks it means .. She said she had accidentally moved things around in the computer and that we had a very popular room. We would be getting a refund of some sort she assured me. As I start to head back to the room, I noticed the older man at the desk also, accompanied by an older woman. Odd, because she wasn't upstairs when the hotel staff member and older man barged into our room. An hour or so later I headed back to the desk to get the Wifi password and encountered a different staff member. After getting the code, I asked if she'd heard about the incident, but she hadn't and asked me to tell her. After I had finished, she explained, they had had issues with the other staff member before and she was going to have a chat with the general manager about the issue and to make things right. After a very tense, almost sleepless night (we had no way of knowing if someone was going to try to enter our room again) we checked out and I left my contact info for the staff member I had spoken with so we could find a resolution. Days later, I heard nothing, so I called and spoke with her again. She said she hadn't met with the GM yet, as he was busy with other projects. She said they would meet the next day and get back to me. I was worried that my information had gotten "misplaced" by the first staff member, but this staffer did have my number. Next day? Crickets. Nothing at all. So I waited a few more days. And so here we are. I don't like leaving reviews like this, but I feel I didn't really have choice. The architecture was awesome, but was overshadowed by the heavy handed treatment...
Read moreOn a family road trip with 6 people. I thought this would be a cool historical and charming place to stay. I would give them an A+ for cleanliness but the hotel is not charming, it is sterile and empty feeling! The lobby, though architecturally beautiful, is very sparingly furnished with some chairs and a few tables. There are NO amenities! Come to find out, everything above the fourth floor are apartments and they have to maintain the hotel as part of their historical designation. All of the old rooms, like the ball room, are closed, everything is kept lights out and very uninviting. NO breakfast offered. No dining. Bar? Ha! Closed! The furnishings in the rooms are minimal. No real seating other than a desk chair. We had two suites, one regular chair. The single room was very small. The three floors with rooms to rent have HORRIBLE views! The neighboring buildings are empty and run down, though the city is attempting to redo downtown. The blinds in the rooms do not draw up. The air-conditioning is a portable roll away that is so loud you can't hear the tiny TV. The fiberglass shower in our room was a 3'×3' old style stall and barely accommodated my 6'3" husband. This was a sad disappointment to all of us! This place has SOOO much potential and because of the lovely photography in their photos. would draw a good many people like us! It does NOT deliver. We paid a good amount to stay here but, sadly, unless you are getting a really good rate, I would not recommend. The downtown is sketchy at...
Read moreWhat a treat it was to stay here. I needed a last-minute hotel due to travel conditions. I booked online and within 5 minutes I was able to go up to the desk, pay, and get my room key. I stayed in the motel portion, which was a bit cheaper. It was conveniently located just a couple blocks from Sparky's Garage, a great place to eat if you're in Butte.
My room was cozy and clean. Everything had an inviting, old-fashioned feel. I was actually able to get more comfortable here than most hotels. The buildings being older may not be everyone's thing. Sometimes there's a big rumble/rattle -- I think it's when the elevator is being used. But the rooms still had a working shower, microwave, and small fridge. And for me, the quirks of this stay were a big part of the appeal and charm.
The workers at the desk were very accommodating and kind. I was able to get a few postcards of historic pictures/artwork of the Finlen Hotel, which were only $1 apiece. No breakfast is provided, but they do have complimentary coffee and tea in the main lobby.
It was great to luck out and get to stay here for a night. If I'm ever in Butte, I'll make sure to book here again. Maybe I'll even splurge and stay on the hotel side! I highly recommend this place if you're ever stopping by...
